This is a copy paste from my tumblr, but I figured there's not much to add and some of you guys might get a bit of amusement from my impressions.
Report from my first anime convention.
So, I don’t like anime, like much at all, there are a few (2?) manga I like, and I’ve never really gotten into Anime as an art form. Just haven’t had many click, but I’ve always thought of myself as a nerd.
One of my best friends wanted me to go with him to Connecticon so I did. It was fun, but also a bit odd. I realized a few things about myself.
1) I am not the same kind of nerd a lot of people are. I’m much more rounded in my interests and I guess a bit less open about my nerdiness, I don’t always wear it on my sleeve.
2) Holy shit there was a lot of weird activity and interaction based on people lacking a certain fundamental self confidence.
3) I’m in a lot better shape than I thought I was, you go to the gym a lot and you start only comparing yourself to gym rats, you go to an anime convention (or any other nerd fest) and you’re with a very different portion of the population, and one with more similar interests to me (in terms of not being 100% obsessed with fitness).
4) Cosplay is interesting, there were some people with really good ones, some with bad ones, and some with odd ones. Nothing too weird or creepy, though I did have a lot of fun just taking in the weird anime type clothing and hair on actual people.
5) credit to people for not having a lot of body shame. I’m not being sarcastic here, I’m probably over-conscious of my bodily faults, and there were people much heavier and in worse shape than me wearing much tighter and revealing clothing than I would, so credit to them for having the self confidence to just rock it out.
6) I went wearing my lest nerd appropriate but identifiable as something shirt. So I was wearing my SAMCRO shirt.
