Godzilla (2014)

There's an argument to be made that once you start plotting with kaiju, realism has largely gone out the window.

Is it really such a hop from Godzilla and the MUTOs to Ghidorah?

With the way they were done, yes.

Hey, if they build -up- to Ghidorah, then it'll be like starting with hard sci-fi Iron Man and ending up with the Avengers fighting Loki and his alien army.

I still want to see that centipede kaiju from the "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" teaser trailer.

So we're not getting original monsters anymore?

I wouldn't rule that out so fast. I mean, one of the reasons why this Godzilla continuity debut is so acclaimed is because the team making this isn't totally sticking to old conventions.

Now if the sequel had a similar relationship unfold between Mothra and humanity, we would essentially have a modern update of the character that would be faithful to the benevolent nature of the Toho version while not straying too far outside the realm of science in Edwards' more grounded reimagining.

This raises the question, what does 21st century humanity do to benefit the untamed ecosystem?

...............Well certain species of flora and fauna do sometimes benefit from our involvement. Like when we introduce them to a new environment they can thrive in with no direct competition to speak of. **smiles nervously**

We killed a bunch of diseases I guess.

Leave tasty things in garbage cans for bears.

We keep species from going extinct.

...granted, it's our fault they were going extinct in the first place, so I guess if Mothra's not a completely pure good creature in this, that's not enough to keep her from being pissed at us.

By making some species go extinct, we often help other species jump up the food chain. And then we wind up owning the Apex Predator spot.

Maybe we produce something it eats. Like nuclear energy. That could lead to an extremely beneficial symbiotic relationship if we figured things out the right way, where we could get it to eat our nuclear waste. And protect us from other monsters. Kill two birds with one stone.

But then that ruins the Aesop, that would be the narrative congratulating us for putting so much nuclear waste into the environment because it's so good for the ecosystem.

Well, everything's got a niche. We benefit rats and cockroaches by creating tons of garbage. But I see your point.

Thou art fools! The dust mites swarm around our dwellings yet you think it is humans Mothra protects and not they, her arthropod kin? Foolish fools! Indirect has some lakeside property if yee be interested.

But seriously, I'm a little annoyed it took all of one movie before they said "let's remake" destroy all monsters (unless that isn't what they said)

They simply said that they plan for Mothra, Ronan and King Ghidorah to appear in the sequels. Not necessarily the same sequel, and not certainly the next sequel.

I'd be cool for Mothra laying eggs in farm land, and thus will protect humans because humans make good nesting spots, but would turn on humans if they screwed up.

As long as the twin fairies somehow show up, even if it was in a drug trip or something, I'm fine with mothra.

Godzilla sequel scheduled for 2018.

Hopefully Aaron Johnson can learn to act in the interim.

Or at least learn to emote.

Or someone can learn the script needs more than the bare minimum of Godzilla.

I hope there are more speeches about balance.

I hope we get a scientist that acts like a scientist.

I hope they bring Bryan Cranston's character back from the dead in the most contrived manner possible, then kill him 1/3 through again.

If they bring Cranston back, his soul has to inhabit Jet Jaguar.
