Sounds about right. If only the Goths and the Huns left the Roman Empire alone.

I like to keep my audience riveted.

There's a couple of different explanations that I've seen, but it mostly boils down to the fact that people in the Middle Ages couldn't spell.

Why does German have triple consonants, like "FFF" in Schifffahrt?
Because it is a compound word of "Schiff" (ship) + "Fahrt" (tour/ride).

Another example: "Brennnessel".

I know why (I studied German, which is why I am aware the word exists), it's just silly.

Because the "i" is short, a vocal in front of two consonants gets shortened.

And if you wonder why it has to be short: "Schi(e)f" means "tilted" or "crooked".

So it's something like "misspelled", but worse.

Lochness: Ohh. :o So why not merge Schifffahrt into Schiffahrt? It looks cleaner. :3

1. Because German doesn't work that way.

2. "Schiffa(h)rt" would mean "type of ship.

The amusing thing is, the I in Schiff still sounds "long" to Dutch speakers. A truly "short" I would be the I in Itzehoe.
