I think the blank eyes work. Sans uses those when he's being dead serious and intimidating. He really doesn't want Frisk to leave the Ruins. He's afraid of what the King will do, just as Toriel was afraid of what Asgore would do (and possibly DID do... [i mean, it isn't explicitly stated Asgore has killed humans, but the implications are there...])

it's word of toby'd that the "no humans made it past asgore" was specifically "past asgore not to asgore" (tweet deleted with toby's old twitter but evidence that it existed exists)

Don't have much to say on IV/TE other than that they're both looking great to me. TE!Sans in particular is looking pretty nice.

On a different AU-related note, I decided to read through Storyshift. Why didn't I start following it earlier? From what's been posted so far it's been really enjoyable.

And now that we've seen SS!Asgore I know what to expect from him and how to differentiate Asgore in my own AU (who's also the Royal Scientist) from him.

"past asgore not to asgore" just clarifies that Undyne said "nobody's ever made it past Asgore", rather than "nobody's ever made it to Asgore". The latter would prove that Asgore didn't murder any fallen humans, but the former only proves he murdered at least one, not all six. (Well, technically, it doesn't prove even that by itself, but if it wasn't true, there'd be no need to distinguish.)

"rip 6 times" is a little less ambiguous. I mean, you can still claim he didn't mean that Asgore killed them and was just joking about the fact that they died one way or another, but I'd call that a stretch.

Also, the tweets still exist under @tobyfox, Toby didn't remake his twitter, he just renamed it.

Random thought: Given that Asriel was able to absorb Chara's soul, we can establish that it is possible to gather the soul of someone without murderizing them.

So Asgore could have theoretically crossed the barrier after getting one human soul (like Toriel said). And then he could just pretend to be the Grim Reaper or something, and gather the souls of humans that were already dying anyway.

Yeah. Though the backstory with Asriel implies that a monster with a human soul is really scary to look at.

Thing is that the image described in Waterfall is seen as disturbing. First stage Asriel is basically a slightly evil looking but otherwise ordinary adult boss monster.

Rough draft 4, up to the game over screen.

Going to do some cosmetic changes for sure. Maybe add flowers in the candy room. Remove spike slits in second rock room, make the buttons in some of the battle shots more accurate. That "Asgorgeous" pickup line is 100% placeholder, tbh, so that is also definitely subject to change.

My biggest concerns aside from visual polish is making sure the dialogue flows decently. :|a I am tempted to add a few more caps to the failed miniboss fight just to make the transitions a bit smoother. Idk. Feedback is appreciated so I can work toward the final edit.

Regarding the narration for the candy bowl feeling too much like Chara (though I don't get why that's a bad thing); maybe you could have Frisk say the "For shame, Flowey" line instead?

Besides that I'm still reading through it and haven't gotten to the new parts yet. I'll let you know what I think of those once I get to them.

So, a new question to everyone else who's working on a sprite comic AU: Where do you get your base assets (things like the original character sprites)? I'm thinking I should finally stop being lazy and actually make something worth showing about FractureTale, but my original art skills are pretty bad.

Regarding Asgore, I figured he's killed at least the light Blue SOUL, and that's when Toriel left and carried their equipment with them back to the Ruins.

I could also see him killing the Yellow SOUL and disposing of their equipment in the dump. I suppose whether or not he killed all of them depends on whether human SOU Ls disappear upon death or can persist for long enough for them to be taken to New Home, since Undyne feels pretty confident that killing you in Waterfall will let her harvest your SOUL.

It's fairly likely that he's killed all of them, though. If the humans had Determination then Asgore is the only place they could have really stopped, since not even Flowey can get past him, and finding their gear on the way is just a gameplay thing. I'm more partial to the theory that Asgore's only killed a handful of them, though, since a huge part of Undertale is blending those gameplay mechanics into the story.

Yeah, I mean, I am going for a narrachara angle here. I just don't wanna overdo it, y'know? Which is why I'm probs gonna axe the "candy conspiracy" bit. Maybe have Frisk say something there instead.

Beyond that, my biggest concerns are balancing Frisk being an overall nice kid with their slightly mischievous/silly side (flirting with Asgore, grabbing the second candy on their own). They get a little impatient in places in this update, but I don't want 'em to seem -too- mean. Tbh, I think going through some of those Ruins puzzles and having other people try to hold your hand along the way WOULD get frustrating. XD

Well, that, and I'm unsure if the miniboss needs a few more slides so Frisk losing ins't so abrupt. I'm thinking once they hit 3 HP, I might have one more flavor text thing, saying something like...

"Eat the candy," or some other vague warning, but Frisk ends up scared enough that they forgot all about the sweets.

Also, do you think it would be worth inserting one or two slides to show that random encounters are still a thing? Even if it's just the spare screen.

Why not? I intend to do ever random encounter Gem once for the fact that these are new encounters put in similar situations but even in normal A Us a few panels of that can't hurt.

Speaking of which how do you like the encounter pixelations?

That explains why Aqua's items are in the Ruins yet their Soul was collected. It's been bothering me for a while.

It's pretty much the only story way I can explain the presence of those items in the Ruins, unless they really were just toys that the Light Blue SOUL dropped there.

It's a theory I like because it adds a level of ruthlessness to Toriel, that she was tenuously on board with Asgore's plan until he tried to backpedal out of it.

Also, did we ever get concrete info on whether all humans would have SAVE manipulation powers? My headcanon is that Monsters naturally created magical powers in humanity, so there aren't any more human wizards left on the surface since sealing the Monsters, and the reason humans can access Determination is by being placed in a magic rich environment.
