Has anyone ever had a problem with Mass Effect where the disc seems to be clean, but the Xbox can't read it? I've got that problem now but have no idea I how to fix it. Anyone had this problem before? Any idea of how to fix it?

What type of Xbox do you have? Plus how old is it?

One of the first ones. Got the button and all the little slots below the CD tray. I think six or seven years.

....Well I have some bad news for you...your xbox is starting to overheat. A lot of the parts inside are melted which is why your CD is not reading. You may have to get a slim and transfer your data.

Every other game works, though, and this is a pretty old problem, I only recently started wanting to play the game again after my brother an I finally got XBL.

...I mostly say that because that is how the problems started with my original. Honestly I would wait and see what would happen plus get feed back from others on subject. I just want you to be prepare for the worse.

Have you tried looking up the error code you're getting on Microsoft's troubleshooting page? And are you sure nothing's wrong with that disk, since others apparently are functional?

Worst case scenario: upcoming RROD.

There are a few tricks to get it too read, but I forgot them.

[up]Oh right the code. That would be smart to do. Wow I can see why I didn't think of it.

I've heard that Microsoft's stuff is just "Get a new Xbox". I don't want to have to do that unless I have to.

Well my friend tap his to get it to read. I keep it on and try to get it to read, but I killed it so don't do what I did.

So tap it like while it's reading the disk, or some other point?

While it is reading, but lightly you don't want to damage it.

So before it goes to the title screen? That's as far as it'll go. I press start and I craps out.

I say test to see if it goes to the title screen and you will know to stop or keep going if the CD stops reading.

So once it comes up just keep tapping? I've done it twice, it's quit both times.

..Hmmm...that like the only trick I can remember. It is more than likely that CD will not read.

I hate to say it but it does sound like your machine is heading for a red ring of death. My older Xbox had similar behaviour. I ended up having to get a slim.

I don't want him to give up hope just yet. I mean the signs point to the RROD, but I feel better for him it doesn't happen.

I could just buy it on the Box itself but I already spent 14 dollars on the one I have now, unless Gamestop's warranty policy allows me to get a different game than another copy of Mass Effect.

I'm with everyone else in the opinion that your Xbox is heading towards death.

The "best" solution, if every other game does work, is for you to sell the xbox to Gamestop, before it does RROD, and get a new one... That way you at least get something for it. You'd still be spending money on a new console, but it wouldn't be the full $250...

That advice only really applies if you were to want a new xbox in the event your current one were to die...

Well I did come across a lens cleaner disc thing while I was in Hastings tonight, though that probably wouldn't solve the problem. Would downloading it to the hard drive fix it, maybe?
