Just had the urge to discuss this movie, especially considering how dated it feels now. It's an amusing, horrible, mindless film that disregards any science and consistency. And I remember actually genuinely liking it when I first saw it for some reason...

I couldn't find the thread for it, so if there is one just shoot me the link.

One of the main reasons I wanted to discuss this movie was its instance of "Strawman Has a Point". Many people consider Oliver Platt's character to be the most intelligent character and a realist in the face of idealism. But is he really? Maybe it's the stains of a designated villain which still make him a jerk, but it seemed like his character was flawed as well. Was he really pragmatic?

For me it was like Indpendence Day, nice looking and enjoyable despite being rather bad.

I mean the special effects were still impressive.

As for the Desginated Villain situation, well he seemed to swap between jerk and reasonable figure to me. They didn't seem to find an inbetween for him at least in my perspective.
