Pope Francis (apologies for the source. Only one I can find in English)

"Forgive me for being a little bit of a feminist"

More than an actual serious thing it is just a lil funny thing on how dost the Pope maketh me chortle a bit

@Mopman: I sent the request for access to your essay.

[up]I can definitely see his point. Sadly, he'll probably be attacked by both ultra-conservative Catholics and anti-theist feminists (not to mention other groups).

Made it public, should be fine.

It's a fairly good essay, and I can definitely relate to it, especially in regards to my quasi-agnostic years in college (which happened to coincide with the Pope Benedict XVI years)and the way people nowadays bash the Catholic Church without really knowing it as a whole and how it came to be in this present day after the horrible stuff that happened in the past (and some stuff which is still quite bad nowadays and which hasn't been fully dealt with). They also tend to bash while acknowledging the big amount of good it has brought into this world. I also understand and relate to the familial and cultural connection (which is something certain 'Protestant Atheists' don't seem to get).

Btw, are you limited to 2 pages? I'd suggest adding something about any possible inner conflicts (e.g. Catholic guilt), in case you had them.

Oh, certainly not limited at all, but the teacher has yet to express dissatisfaction at the length, and I feel like anything I could add would merely be repeating what I have already said.

It would have been better if the Pope referred himself as being egalitarian, methinks.

Not really, that's pretty clear from what's he's already said, but him also being specifically a feminist, that's an actual revelation.

[up]I'm sure millions of people are scoffing at such a 'revelation', by saying [top 10 things that make the Catholic Church a bastion of patriarchy].

Or alternatively, 'if he's such a feminist, why doesn't he let women become priests right the fuck now?'

Anyway, two things: either he's being misquoted (which wouldn't surprise me - his original, unedited statement is probably far more tame, or, like I said previously, he's gonna be attacked by both conservative Catholics and non-religious/anti-religious feminists.

He wasnt delivering an encyclical or anything. He even quipped more afterwards. Come on.

[up]Yeah, but you know how the media is like: they like to portray the Pope's informal words as official doctrine, even if it's about dogs going to heaven (not that there's anything wrong with that - it's just that the Catholic Church doesn't have a clear, defined stance on such a thing).

Media's dum anyways. Just have fun with what he said yourself and you be the judge without worrying what others will judge him as. Francis has enough problems as it is and every human being deserves to be allowed humor every now and then, and the context in which he made it was not innapropriate.

It's Ann Coulter. She's a professional offender and anti-many things (Catholicism, World Cup... stuff she feels it's not American enough).

Best to ignore her.

Yeah, that was somewhat annoying. Actually wait for him to really say something, dammit. Just because he praised America doesn't mean they should clap at every period.

If they stop clapping, someone will accuse them of being anti-Catholic. Or not patriotic enough. That's why they all wear little flag lapel pins.
