The first one is out on PSN this week and hopefully the others follow suit before too long. I assume this is the US we're talking about but an EU release will probably be a thing eventually.

If this needs any introduction to anybody, the games contain some of the most scarringly horrifying moments in gaming ever, the second one in particular makes frequent appearances on Scariest Games of All Time lists.

Personally, the Fatal Frame series has always had a special place in my heart for some reason. I think part of it is because I generally prefer the type of horror it presents. Although it has jump scares, it also has a constant tension, and the behavior and nature of many of the ghosts also add to it.

I still remember one of the scariest moments I had in the first game was from a random encounter with the Broken Neck woman. I hear the music start up, hear her making noises, but don't see her anywhere. I don't recall the filament really lighting up in any particular direction either. I eventually start looking through the camera to try and get a better idea of where she might be hiding. Pretty much as soon as I brought up it, she comes sliding into view from nowhere, right in front of me, and laughs. I'm not sure if she's scripted to appear that way sometimes or if it was simply (bad) luck, but it definitely startled the heck out of me.

Other highlights include losing track of one of the Girl in the Well when first encountered only to have her end up right in front of me, about to attack, when I turned around. Still amazed I managed to keep enough control of my senses to go for the shutter chance instead of just running/snapping a photo on reflex. Second one was the Boy Playing Tag. I hate that ghost so, so much.

Sorry for the bump, but fuck this series! There is one thing to give optional Bad Ending if you screwed up shit during your gameplay, but it seems like in this series on your first playthrough regardless of what you do you'll get the Bad Ending - it seems incredibly unfair. The only way to amend the gut-wrenching Player Punch is to replay the entire game on harder difficulty - which is an incredible chore to do since the game is pretty linear and they don't really have new scares up their sleeves.

Or maybe this is just a rant from a person who's upset about the Crimson Butterfly ending in FF 2, I might calm down tomorrow and replay the game probably in a couple months to get the Abyss ending

This thread may be dead, but the series is not.

Wii U exclusive, subtitled "The Black Haired Shrine Maiden" (Japanese title: Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko), due in Japan September 27th. LuckilyUnfortunately there's no news of any American/European releases just yet. And yes, it does look like the gamepad will be used as the camera.

This Nintendo is the one that's publishing Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third worldwide (and Tomodachi Life, though not mature definitely falls into the "distinctly Japanese game" category)

[up]Fatal Frame 4 had a game breaking glitch that Tecmo-Koei didn't want to fix if they would have fixed it Nintendo would have localized it.

Fatal Frame 2: Wii Edition released too late in the Wii's life for Nintendo of America to even think about localizing it but it was localized in Europe. Nintendo of America thought everyone would want to move onto the Wii U and not be interested in another Wii title.

Nintendo of America is tweeting the Fatal Frame 5 announcement and Bill Trinen is also tweeting it and he is in charge of the Nintendo Treehouse in Nintendo of America where they work on localizing the game so it is possible that they would localize it.

Just saw that part. Wonder if this means they'll put the Wii version of Fatal Frame 2 on the eShop?

English trailer:

...I think I might stick with the Japanese track. But yeah, it's out next week.

Also this will only be a digital release in the US, unfortunately, only EU gets the physical/special edition. Nintendo really isn't putting much behind this release.

edit: yikes, this is catching some pretty stinky critical turds.

Downloaded the free part and got up to chapter 1. Spooky. Not incredibly scary, but the atmosphere is bleak. Using the camera is a little tricky to get used to, especially for those bonus ghosts that pop up for a few seconds, but I think I can get used to it. I'll probably buy the full version if I like chapter 2.
