The tone of the episode seemed drastically different from the other episodes. Well, at least the recent ones. Not just the relative lack of drama, the entire flow of the narrative was different. I felt like I was watching a different show, Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu or something. The way the background characters were treated stood out to me in particular.

I see what you mean. I wasn't hit quite that hard while watching it, but I was expecting something a little different.
It's not much of a last episode, but that's not entirely a bad thing. Any resolution would be insufficient and tacked on.
At least it's one of the best looking episodes of the show.
Actualy this show is very Pragmatic Adaptation. To stuff 6 volumes into 12 episodes it cutt of all uneccessary stuff, which means fair share of more light hearted but plot unrelated chapters. Which makes anime virtualy more serious ( and it was good choice, wasn't it?)
Anyway this episode was written by Author himself and result is like this. I liked it and want take Meguri home with me.

Well, the thing that bugs me most is the crowd herd of red-team males who simultaneously swoon over Saika. I mean, yeah, Saika is cute, but to have them fall on the ground in lovesickness? It takes the story to a level of slapstick exaggeration previous unseen. Fundamentally, the story has always been fairly realistic, even when being light-hearted or humorous. Komachi is a hilarious character, but she's fundamentally believable as this girl who's kind of sick of her brother's self-destructive attitude.
I guess that's the key here: believability. Comedy, light-heartedness, even eccentricity have all been seen before and make sense. But I thought this episode crossed a line that hadn't been crossed, and forces me to look back on the entire series a bit differently.
...I sound really judgmental here, but I didn't think it was that bad. More jarring than offensive.
I was just wondering: could it be that Zaimokuza didn't get a lot of screentime because the lighthearted parts got cut out?
Episode 13:
- This episode treated the minor characters well. Especially for Zaimokuza, whom I considered to be one of the lower-end minor characters. I liked how he got along so well with the fujoshi! And how he got to witness "the exact moment when someone falls in love".
- Awesome knight outfits. You did well Silver Hair.
- The girls' game was boring because Yukinon is just too strong. The boys' game was a lot more fun. Saika's Paralyzing Wave of Moe was wth, but Hikki's gambits more than made up for it. I didn't expect him to use the bandage like that (usually there's a rule that forbids that sort of thing). But when he did it, everything fell into place and I'm glad Hikki did pull off a "decoy of a decoy" plan! Hayato really should have known better than to not expect Hikki would expect Hayato would go for him.
- Yukinon's dere is showing. "I just happened to see it."

Zaimokuza didn't get much screen time in novels either, but most of that little was indeed left out.
I see. Thanks! That's rather interesting.
If you don't mind my asking, just how much of the LNs does the anime cover? And what happens after the parts the anime covers? Maybe even tell us about the parts that got cut out?
This link is a hub to a number of summaries of volumes 3 through 7. The anime is a fairly faithful adaptation of the first two volumes, but volume 3 and 4 onward have much more cut out. The anime covered up until volume 6.
Anime covered everything plot related up to volume 6 quite faithfully. Though they significantly shortened Hikki mono/dia-logues (yes there were more). Most of left out are volumes 3 and 5 where only one chapter were adapted. Rest were centered about other girls like Saki, Shizuka and ... err... Saika.
PS: on Bakatsuki is first two chapter of volume 7 which is where anime ended. It's great

Jelly jelly jelly.
I did naht.Oregairu just won grand prize in Kono Light Novel Ga Sugoi (annual Light Novel guide book)and overcomed such powerhouses as To Aru Majutsu No Index and SAO which occupied first spots for while (understatement).

It is great that it won against To Aru and SAO, it is also nice that a novel with all its social commentary got to the top. I don't have much else to say
I'm kinda sad that, judging by the past winners, it was an editor's choice instead of a poll winner...
But hey, anything to help a series I love get more attention. Oregairu does a lot of things right, and I'd be happy to see it continue to do well.
Huh? I was sure this award was always given by popularity poll. how did you concluded otherwise?
It's a mix of input from industry insiders and fans. From what I've heard, the industry has greater influence when it comes to picking the top ranked light novels, which is obscure titles like Alderamin in the Sky, Clockwork Planet, etc got so high.
BTW, character rankings are out, and Hachiman took first place in the male rankings, and Yukino took 2nd place in the female rankings, with Yui taking 4th. Excellent results.
Depends, where did Saika place?
In with the male characters or in with the female characters :p
If they will continue rank this well next year, second season (despite of studio) doesn't sound that unrealistic anymore

I'm on board.
And they said it would never happen! Well... at least people who weren't Tenzen kept saying that.
Did I realy was that optimistic? I can't remember...
Well, good for me
Allow me to throw in some pessimism.
There aren't enough new novels for it to have pacing similar to the first series, which means it's probably going to incorporate all the apparently cliche LN stuff that was trimmed from the first anime. So the experience is going to be watered down and less appealing.
You are overeacting. Both volume 7 and 8 contain big arcs, volume 9 is already released as well, considering there is no date set yet we can get another one or two volumes before anime became actual, which is roughly where are novels hinted end.
Considering above mentioned, it's quite good idea start with something less serious before jumping into dramatic 7th v. so either Shizuka chapter or Saki would not be bad idea. Especialy later need some exposition to make her behaviour later more belivable.

I don't remember who either of those people are.
Shizuka = teacher, Saki = (not)deliquent girl.
You should probably rewatch.

Episode 13. In which there is enthusiasm of varying degrees.
I liked that smile Yuki did when she told Hikki he was good at not being remembered.
Also, it's impossible to hammer nails without having a few in your mouth. There's a law somewhere. It doesn't matter how many pockets you have, or whether any convenient trays or surfaces are around you can place them in. You have to have them in your mouth.
Hey, a High Five.
The power of cute. It is to be feared.
I expected that decoy for a decoy. Didn't know if it was going to be him or some other people, though. But it was obvious that the one person who is often friendly to Hikki would actually recognise him. Not that it made a difference, except maybe for school spirit.
