The General Religion, Mythology, and Theology Thread

Go To

Since we've gotten told to stop talking generally about religion twice in the Homosexuality and Religion thread and were told that, if we want to talk generally about religion, we need to make a new thread, I have made a new thread.

Full disclosure: I am an agnostic atheist and anti-theist, but I'm very interested in theology and religion.

Mod Edit: All right, there are a couple of ground rules here:

  • This is not a thread for mindless bashing of religion or of atheism/agnosticism etc. All view points are welcome here. Let's have a civil debate.
  • Religion is a volatile subject. Please don't post here if you can't manage a civil discussion with viewpoints you disagree with. There will be no tolerance for people who can't keep the tone light hearted.
  • There is no one true answer for this thread. Don't try to force out opposing voices.

I know, right? Isn't it awesome? Let your bugs do the work for you, far less moral responsibility! It's like reverse War Of The Worlds!

[up]Actually, given that War of the Worlds was a critique of colonialism...

To be fair, epidemiology was poorly understood and it was a side effect of just being there.

[up]The Plague also had been interpreted as divine intervention as god's punishment for opposing the divine rule of the Conquistadores.

So did I.

So, spirituality. I used to feel it as a kid. Used to find religious buildings impressive.

Now I find them pretty at best. Catholic churches in particular had a meteoric fall from "breathtaking halls of awesomeness" to "tacky collection of ugly fanart". Maybe it's not me, and it's actually that they have lower budget these days, due to lack of attendance, and can't afford to look as pretty as they used to? Or maybe it is me, I mean, damn, those pictorial themes got repetitive, like, what's with all the Madonna and Child everywhere? Why is it that they never seem to illustrate Jesus' lessons or parables or sermons, and instead just rehash miracle moments and pointless headshots?

[up] Or, more practically, it depends on what style of architecture was in fashion at the time the Church was (re)built.

It's definately not you. Cathedrals are awesome (literally, I think the word may have been invented just to describe certain Catholic Cathedrals). Modern church architecture? Not so much.

Yuck

And the lack of awareness on the part of the website hosting the pictures is just icing on the cake.

I don't have that problem with mosques, though, but I've always been a huge fan of geometric shapes.

I've been always a fan of Gothic architecture myself and I find Romanesque architecture rather boring.

Just remenber guys, if you enter in a cathedral, you have to put this soundtrack:

it really set the mood.

Anyway, for you how are the most beautifull religious buldings?

Pulls double duty, too, architecturally. That girl is BIG.

Like, I am awed at what Justinian pulled off there. Those Romans sure could build.

Durham Cathedral is about as great as Stonehenge... and, not just from the outside of either.

Rouen can stuff it: Durham is Norman Gothic in a neat enough package that you can take it all in, all while it keeps a coherent feel so you can enjoy it, rather than getting lost in it (and wondering if various generations of architects were deliberately going out to confuse matters with their additions). The problem of the larger Gothic piles: random growth can produce iffy results.

At least Durham's location forced them to remain honest to the original intent. tongue

So could their relatives on the other side of Europe - ever seen the Octagon at Aachen cathedral?

Personally, my favorite style has always been Romanesque. Medieval Europe was awesome. Columbus ruined everything.
