@ Shaoken

Correction on the fines @Hallow Hawk, if they refuse to pay the first fine they can be fined up to $780K per day backdated to March. I already calculated this on the Social Media thread and Twitter would owe over $140M to date if the maximum penalty is implemented. And that's not an upgrade on the initial fine, that's in addition to the original fine.

Sorry. Was writing directly from the article.

From the relevant bit of the article:

"If they don't pay the fine within 28 days, then we at eSafety can take them to a civil penalty proceeding, take them to court, and depending on what the court decides, the overall fine could be much higher — up to $780,000 per day from the time that they're found being out of compliance since March," Ms Inman Grant said.

Obviously this is dependent on Twitter not paying the fine first and what the court decides is an appropriate penalty. Given the subject matter though if Twitter doesn't comply I imagine that courts will fine them on the higher side if they continue ignoring the situation.

Sydney Morning Herald: Will Gladys Berejiklian be Optus’ next CEO? (Not super likely considering her ongoing thing with the NSW ICAC, but she is one of their top executives, so if she could wriggle her way out of that somehow...)

Australia will implement a new law that triples the fees that foreign buyers need to pay in order to buy an existing home.

On the other hand, the government will cut application fees for foreign investment in "build to rent" projects, hoping to encourage the construction of more homes

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said:

Higher fees for the purchase of established homes, increased penalties for those that leave properties vacant, and strengthened compliance activity will help ensure foreign investment in residential property is in our national interest.

(....)

These adjustments are all about making sure foreign investment aligns with the Government's agenda to lift the nation's supply of affordable housing.

There is a kind of "housing crisis" in Australia, which has some of the highest prices for homes in the world due to the great difference between demand and supply.

Engineered stone to be banned in Australia from July 1 next year

If we could just figure out some way to prevent harmful particles from invading people's respiratory systems. In the 2020s of all years.

The issue is, Woolworths is one of the main culprits of this "cost of living crisis" through blatant price-gouging. Like, I remember at the start of 2023 when Albanese said "the government is going to cap the price of fuel and eat the extra cost so that petrol stations can set a fair price for consumers" - and then weeks later, he came forward and openly said that after the government had done that, petrol companies kept selling fuel at high prices despite Labor holding up their end of the deal.

Of that rampant corporate profiteering, Woolworths and Coles have been some of the worst for it. They've been raising their prices beyond the scope of inflation for the sake of making filthy lucre. It's disgraceful. And this is after both Woolworths and Coles had that whole "milk war" where they were trying to one-up each other by offering the cheapest milk, causing them to severely underpay farmers who were producing that milk. If you've been tuned into the news sometime in the past ten years, you might remember this.

My first instinct upon reading that headline was "well, guess I'd better make a shop at woolies :^)". This is lazy ideological grandstanding on par with America's BS "War on Christmas". God forbid you go one year without buying shitty green-and-gold colored sunglasses that end up broken and in the bin by the end of the day, and paper plates with the Australian flag on it. Dutton wants a boycott? Guess I'd better start shopping at Woolies.

But Woolies are shit, too. They're profiteering on the basis of "inflation", despite making record profits, and like any major corporation in Australia, they have a history of doing stuff like that - again, consider the milk price debacle where they were undercutting the price to get a leg over Coles, despite paying farmers worse and worse wages for the milk they were marking down.

So I guess my point is this. This is just populist bleating from a human toad to boycott an Australian institution that's just as petty and corrupt as he and his ilk are. And it bugs me to no end that people are going to take this dog and pony show seriously along ideological lines.

Come sail your ships around me, and burn your bridges down.

Joel Cauchi was shot and killed at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre after he killed six people. His targets are mostly women.

A female officers from the New South Wales Police Force was credited for killing Cauchi.

There's talk that he's pro-incel, but I read from someone (who I think IIRC is a criminology prof) says that he could have done it just for the sake of it...
