"Is Yukihura Souma truly just some first year?" - Oh please stop, don't go in that direction! The entire thing with Souma was that he wasn't especially talented or anything just very determinate so trying to make him "special" would be ruining his character.
Yeah, now I'm like 90% sure Takumi is going to lose. That's usually what happens when one character gets lots of praise while they are still cooking.

We knew that from chapter 1. But a big thing was made that Souma didn't actually inherit his father talent, he just never gave up and always tried to improve himself. That was actually a really cool character trait, so if they just switch it for "the main character has special talent" thing, it's just going to be for the worse.

I took this as just more set up for Eizan's defeat actually. Making sure he'll be as pissed off as possible so that the faces will be marvelous.
Honestly, though it's still early, I'm more and more feeling like all three of them are going to win. I didn't actually want sweeps every round, but, eh.
Honestly, the handpicked students thing doesn't really make that much sense. It works for some students but the setup for some students like, say, Akira or Subaru doesn't leave much room for Senzaemon's involvement. They'd have gone with or without him.
As for Nene's line, I took it as her noticing the same thing Azami did.

Yea, I took the thing with Eizan as just making it seem like he's in control before Takumi reveals he had everything under control himself.
I believe the handpicked thing is mostly revolved around specific people; Soma is obviously one, and I'd imagine he'd got to Alice and Ryou through his son, Takumi and Megumi are probably the outliers. I don't understand why they're making a big deal out of it though, so what if he hand picked them?

Alice would have gone anyway. She didn't need to be handpicked. Same with Hisako once you know Erina is going.
Is this where Eizan reveals that he picked out Subaru because Subaru wields an inferior version of Eizan's suddenly revealed Counter Cooking, where he analyzes your dish and then just makes something better than it without having to copy it?
Yeah, I don't get why being handpicked by Sanzaemon is a big deal either. People respect him as Tootsuki's headmaster, but he's never had a significant role in the story, so this reveal doesn't have that much of an impact.
It might be trying to say that Sanzaeomon is a "talent seer" and whomever he chooses is automatically the best of the best, but that's never been established in the story.
And let's not forget that Soma is the only person in his generation who transferred in during high school, everyone else was just middle school graduates moving forward in their education. And since the middle school is said to have a more or less normal education system (as opposed to the "cutthroat" competitive environment that is Tootsuki High), I really don't see how Sanzaemon can be involved in all of their enrolment.

Really? IIRC, during the entrance ceremony, Soma was said to be the only transfer student, and the Aldinis were already present with the rest of the student body when Soma made his "controversial" speech, so I assumed they were middle school graduates like Megumi and the rest.
Oh wait yeah they did enter Middle School. Igot confused as they looked like they haven't aged from their flashback.

You could make a case that Senzaemon sent Jun to his home country after hearing rumors of this child prodigy.
They're probably going to elaborate on it later. Now, as for whether the elaboration will be satisfying, who knows, case by case probably.
