It’s really obvious in shorts like Tokyo Go and Futebol Classico, where Mickey’s design is extremely classic inspired.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain. It's an interesting dynamic. The more classic look ups the charm on these episodes, while the more grotesque look (if anyone knows a better term, please tell me) fits a whackier episode.
Optimism is a duty.I think the "Wish Upon a Coin" short is a good example of how they use art to suit the mood in one short. The first half is very classical and lush, but gets more sketchy and modern in the chase scene after Pete shows up.

... Mickey and Minnie have the WORST taste in home decoration. Just. The worst.

Optimism is a duty.Houses totally inspired by the short "The Little House".
They so owe Pete a new house.
Here’s the short they were referencing.
It’s based on a classic children’s book written by Virginia Lee Burton in 1942.

Thank you.
I LOVE it whenever they include little known Disney references.
I remember that one from tv, it was pretty cute.
"My, my, what a pity... still, they weren't very nice." So they deserved to burn, is that it?
That little house is pretty cavalier about the death of it's neighbours in general, isn't it?

Optimism is a duty."Mickey's Birthday Surprise", released by Disney Arabia (?) in honor of his 90th birthday.
It's Mickey Mouse's B-day...
So another special is in order...
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie."Surprise", as released by the usual YouTube channel:
On a related note, Mickey never struck me as the kind of guy who'd be terrified of surprise parties, but this short not only makes it work, but also makes it hilarious.
Is this the first time Minnie is the crazy one? It feels like it.
Optimism is a duty.No.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. That's actually something I really like about this series of shorts. Most other cartoons, especially made recently, have Minnie firmly in the Closer to Earth slot in comparison to everyone else.
These shorts make a point of having Minnie be as looney and out-there as the rest of them, maybe even more at times.
The last Mickey birthday short had a plot like this, where Minnie goes nuts trying to give Mickey a perfect birthday, then destroys the party but makes Mickey happy anyway.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Yeah, there have been quite a few episodes where Minnie has proved to be just as zany as everyone else.

My favorite gag in "Surprise!" was the part where the characters had to lose some weight.
Hoooly cow. He's gittin so much love today, and those episodes are all excellent. I love how bizarre they can get, like a possessed Minnie with an enlarging ray stuck to her head! And yes, I agree with Mickey: I HAAATE elaborate surprises/pranks, not really because they scare me but because I crave control in my life, and when a surprise happens, like on a birthday or April Fool's Day, I gotta get over my frustration for dealing with THIS new thing for hours on end.
May I just say again that even in her age, Russi Taylor can nail any kind of characterization of Minnie depending on the director, even today?? She is Minnie in Roadster Racers, and there Minnie is more gentle and level-headed like we remember her, but in these shorts, she's kind of unhinged.

"Hats Enough"
In which Mickey wears many hats.
Good thing he kicked the hat-as-identity obsession as soon as he did. TF 2 already has enough players as it is
Good thing he realized he's got the most recognizable ears in all animation after 90 years.
Actually, Mickey DOES have a hat when he is Detective Mickey. And so does Everyman Mickey.

Optimism is a duty.
I think you're right. I wonder if its especially the themed episodes that have a more traditional look.
