Concepts for the Eighth TV Tropes Writing Contest

Opening line: There was only seven days left.

Closing line: But for what?

Are we allowed to vote for our own lines?

Because if so I vote 16 for both opener and closer.

Otherwise I vote 1 for opener and 16 for closer.

Some of these lines seem a little too... speculative fiction-specific. While I love those genres, and the majority of my own output is sci-fi/fantasy/horror , do we want to limit these stories so much?

I don't think any of them are particularly Speculative Fiction specific. Even if a line mentions something a bit speculative fiction sounding it is only one line; and if it's only one line then it could quite easily be a metaphor, in a story generally unrelated to Speculative Fiction.

For a first line, I'm inclined to vote for 1, 2 (I'm a little biased here, I'll admit ^^; ), 4, 5 and 9.

For a last line, I'm inclined to vote for 5 and 10.

(Once again, perhaps a crowner to encourage votes from those inclined to press a button or two but not to write out a post?)

I'm leaning toward the "And now I stand proudly in the one place I never meant to be." line. It can work both literally and metaphorically, and maybe even both. It can also work as an Ironic Echo.

@imadinosaur: Too speculative-fiction specific? Forgive me, but I don't really see it, save perhaps for Ending Line no. 14. I'm curious about what led you to this impression.

Actually, I wasn't thinking in literal terms with that Raging Beast line. I was more thinking of... A crazed dictator with WM Ds, or a small child in a restaurant...

Both crowners have one in the lead.

Considering that when I just now checked, the closings crowner had a tie at the top again, I don't think the crowners are settled yet.

Make it a comedy and have Samara/Sadako say the closing line. :P

Ironically, I was considering making it a Home Alone-style Slapstick Comedy, but the closing line would belong to the supposed victim of Sadako.

So...erm...have we reached a decision on the opening and closing lines? Anyone?

This is just about going nowhere...

Perhaps not my authority, but I (informally) declare the crowners be closed, and the most voted line from both crowners are decided to be used for the writing contest.

'I've always said I wouldn't regret my decisions - not even this one.' and 'And now I stand proudly in the one place I never meant to be.' are the two lines. You can have these lines spoken as dialogue, as narration, as a line from a book a character reads in-story, or however creative you want to get with them. Switching pronouns is NOT an option(We can change this if needed be, but really, I don't think that's necessary). So whoever it is that creates the actual contest thread, ya might as well do so now, I guess? Don't wanna have eager writers waitin' any longer.

Oh, I do like those winning lines. They allow for a good deal of flexibility in terms of concept, methinks. Thanks for galvanizing the contest; I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting impatient! I dunno who it is who's going to create the actual thread, either, but I look forward to it.

In the past, the rule has been that the entries must be between 2,000 and 5,000 words.
