Jack The Giant Slayer... So yeah, I just watched this film out of obligations to my gf.

It's... It's really bad, but it's bad in a campy So Bad, It's Good way, and I think that's intentional. It feels like they were trying to make a Princess Bride style film but couldn't go the whole hog with the humor, so they instead went for cheese. The script seems to embrace cliches more than make fun of them. On the plus side, it's nice to see a family fantasy film that's not overly serious or pretentious.

The other interesting thing to note: This film's production cost 195 million american dollars. I have no idea where those effects went, because while the giants have decent art-design, everything looks really damn cheap.

I recommend to give it a watch with a friend; the theater will probably be empty enough that you two can riff the hell out of it while enjoying the funnier and cooler moments.

I saw it the day it came out (I won a ticket) and I enjoyed it. It certainly isn't that good, but it's a lot of fun and the climactic battle has an interesting twist to it that I didn't really expect.

Oh, and the CG production house went bankrupt during the film's production which might have something to do with the sup-par CG.

The beanstalk parts look absolutely amazing though.

[up] Well it would explain why the giants are below par. But that doesn't excuse why the beanstalk (handled by another studio) looks poor.

Last I checked, MPC wasn't the company that bankrupt, so that doesn't explain their abysmal work on said beanstalk.
