Unified Warhammer Fantasy thread

I noticed lack of one general thread regarding Warhammer Fantasy, so I decided to create a one. :)

Not only Warhammer Fantasy Battle discussions welcomed, but also all things related to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (regardless of edition).

If anyone has questions regarding Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay's second edition, feel free to ask since I own most of its sourcebooks.

Warhammer 40,000 has its own thread here

The high magic spell roster was reverted back too (back when I played it looked similar to what it does now, Hand of Glory, Fiery Convocation, etc. etc.)

Anyone here read the Thanquol and Boneripper trilogy?

I don't have their codex army book, but I found a blog post mentioning the 8th ed rules for the dreaded thirteenth:

  • 25+ cast
  • May only effect Infantry
  • 4d6 models are removed as casualties, no saves.
  • If you remove equal or more models than are in the unit, replace with a Clan Rat unit of equal size with any equipment.
So yeah, instant death, no saves except dispelling it first.

4d6 is 4 to 24, with an average of 14. So, target small units if you want to turn them.

[up] Fairly certain he has some kind of magic resistance. (although it's probably still worth a shot)

No saves are allowed. At all. Magic Res gives you up to 4+ ward save against magic, but it won't matter.

So who here has storm of magic?

Well when I looked on the GW website a month or so back, I thought

Fuck! Chaos Warriors have a new book. And empire. When did that happen?

Empire was a while back now. As was Chaos Warriors.

Dark Elves are the newest Fantasy race to get a book, I think.

[up][up]Empire was the second or so of the current crop of Army Books, are you sure you aren't confusing it with the Sigmar's Blood campaign book.

OK. So, I'm popping over here.
I'm interested in the hobby, and I think I'll probably end up on the Fantasy side of things.
So I may pop up with questions sometime soonish.

Yeah. I think I'm going to get the Island of Blood. I know a friend that would really dig the Skaven, and the High Elves seem cool enough. Once I have enough cash to diverge from that, I'll probably get more Skaven stuff and branch out into Lizardmen. The Lizardmen bit is as likely to end up as Vampire Counts or Bretonnians, though.

Definitely going to end up with Skaven stuff.

The idea is that I'm going to be gathering this stuff very slowly in such a way that my friends will hopefully be able to play even if they never invest in anything. Like how one guy in our group has bought like ten Pathfinder books, now. Except I drew the short end of the stick on overall cost. At least I love collecting things.

EDIT: I just noticed you can buy individual paints. OK. This doesn't seem nearly as bad anymore.

High Elves are, in my opinion, perhaps not the best introduction to the game. While they do have some awesome units, they have a high average cost-per-model. And sure, you get some of (if not the best) defensive infantry in the game, and awesome magic to boot, but every loss is -very- keenly felt, and the army overall isn't more durably than your workaday human armies. So if you're going to be playing High Elves a while, I suggest you look into learning a bit more about the Magic Lores. Lore of Life in particular will save your hide with a good caster, and High Elves can get damn solid casters.

Well, they're the introductory point for me purely because they're in what seems to equate to a starter bundle. That said, they are some of the better looking figures in the Warhammer Fantasy setting, and I probably would have expanded to them soon enough, anyway. Thanks for the advice. I have a lot of research to do, and of course I have some purchases to plan further down the line. For now, its all planning, though. I've got other things that needs sorting out before I can devote anything to the hobby.

Actually, funny thing is, this one thing was like half of the reason I chose Fantasy over 40K. 40K's starter pack had two factions I didn't really care to start with while Fantasy's had one I knew I was going to need to collect and one that intrigued me. I might not be here now if the Warhammer 40K starter pack thing had Eldar or Tau in it.

Another reason was that I could use these figures as minis in Pathfinder. That's always a plus.

Yeah, the High Elves have a really cool, very archetypally Elven aesthetic that can be used for a bunch of things, and I'm not saying they're extremely difficult or anything, just very expensive and very elite. It could be worse, you could be playing Wood Elves tongue

If you do end up playing High Elves, a few recommendations I have for expanding the Island of Blood set:

More Spearelves. Other than being mandatory in terms of points, Spearmen are some of your best-value units against fellow T3 creatures because they attack in extra ranks. If my math is correct, if you get charged from the front, your Spearmen will get to attack in four ranks (first two ranks can always attack, you get one rank for using spears and one rank for being an elf,) and you will always strike first.

Sisters of Avelorn: New kids on the block, and some EXTREMELY good archers, especially against evil armies. Plus if you ever end up having an elf ranger in your Pathfinder group (perish the thought) you can use them as minis.

Phoenix Guard: Probably my favorite unit in the game. S4 is alright, but the real advantage is their high Ward save and even higher save against magic, almost to the point where they nullify magic. Stuff a wizard in one of these and he'll have a much, much higher chance of surviving a game. Also cause Fear in any unit they're engaged with.

General on foot: This one sorta speaks for itself, but with High Elves you usually don't want to use monstrous mounts in a defensive list. In an aggressive list they're fine (though you want to upgrade to a dragon at higher points levels,) but for defensive games you want someone on foot.

Dragon Princes + General on horseback: In an aggressive list, these are killer. S6 on the charge, two attacks each, 2+ armor save (against breath weapons, too.) Extremely deadly, but you pay out the nose for them, so keep them alive.

Oh hey. I didn't even notice the Archers of Avalon in my scan through the units. Its genius for them them to use one mold for two or more unit types. They can sell the same product multiple times that way. Genius... and evil.

I'm still relieved I don't have to buy the $135 paint sets they have for each faction.

Especially since my first couple... dozen... will probably look less than stellar.

Another quick thing:

While some of them are super cool, don't bother with special Lord characters. All but two are easy to replicate cheaper with normal characters. The two really good ones are Teclis and the Everqueen. Alith Anar might be good if you're going heavy on Shadow Warriors, but that's about it.

Mkay. That sounds solid.
The Teclis thing makes sense since you said high powered mages would be good.
I'm glad I caught someone that knows this.

Thankfully, Teclis isn't as OP as he used to be. Back in the previous edition he learned all the spells in a school of his choice, got D6 extra power dice, could cast with irresistable force almost every time without causing miscasts, and could dispel one spell, then make the opposing spellcaster forget them. He was the big cheese.

Dang. That sounds a bit much. Why did they have to change it before I got to play?
