I think what would fascinate me more about Aliens is not their biology, but their psychology, technology and society.

Some concepts could have never been thought of, for instance war in the case of the Selenites.

Some technologies could never have been invented, perhaps they never went for weaponry or table cutlery due to appendages that already cut and pierce well? (Like Talons or scythes of some kind)

You implying the only weapons are blades? And even if they had bio blades, why wouldn't the build bladed weapons?

No, not implying that, but it's unlikely that they think "Maybe we should kill prey in a different way than what works" inventing the club or spear.

They'd probably invent ranged weaponry a lot later though, if they have no opposable thumbs that is.

Yes, Xenopsychology and Xenosociology and Xenotechnology. :D

Maybe they developed on a gas giant and thus a lot of their technology centres around that or is built accordingly. :o Thinking about it, would they even have the materials needed to build stuff on one? :/

Maybe. I mean a lot of different things need to be going on here.

Why did they evolve these blades? Offense? Defense? To help eat plants? To look really fuckable?

Are they a hive society? Pack? Solitary?

But not inventing crushing weapons would be really hard.

I suppose if they had exoskeletons or developed armour against their natural blades, then they would invent a club.

If they had a concept of attacking one-another that is, pack mentality/hive mentality would allow for that.

But why limit ourselves to concepts we know on earth? Their mentalities could be completely different, maybe pair-based mentality.

That reminds me of the Scellor that Jukashi made. :3 Humanoid as they are, still. :p

They're a sort of plant-animal symbiote, with psychic algae growing in their cells. They have a sort of hivemind called the undermind where instead of being controlled by it, it sort of acts like an emotional undercurrent. They are sentient and independent (at least when they grow up), but when they die their mind (a psychic pattern) goes back into the undermind (still independant mind you) and then they can pick a new egg to be born anew.

Not realistic, mind you, but really interesting. :p

EDIT: Mind you, humans don't have exoskeletons or talons, but we still developed those weapons. :o

Probably because back then our bladed weapons were more troublesome to put through a skull, so crushing the skull works.

Doesn't really matter about sharpening it, make it heavy enough, and give your fellow man a good whack and you don't need a flint spear and some persistence about it.

That's how I imagine the club being invented. It's just simple and easy to use.

Though, what might be interesting, back on the topic of Aliens, is what fuels they would use for their machines. In my opinion it would be interesting if they developed renewable energies first due to a lack of fossil fuels on their planet.

Final thought before leaving for the night, related to the OP's views:

If the abductions and reports like Betty and Barney Hill's were real, then how can it be said that these aliens are morally/evolutionarily leagues ahead of us? Unconsented capturing and experimenting on a sapient creature, even a rather "lowly" one like a human being is an admittedly barbarous thing to do, and smacks to me highly of our human war crimes.

If we humans are "shit-tier" because of our warfare and conflicts, than how could a species who has risen above the things that hold us back not have qualms about making contact in such an injurious fashion?

Potential theory as regards the above: The aliens in question are, in fact, Salarians, and experimentation is a driving force in Salarian culture. tongue

Humans have not developed any form of immortality so causing suffering to one is not big deal.

I'm okay with aliens as long as they don't leave a mark on my house or step on garden otherwise if they respect my small house then I'll probably give them my brother or some plants like catnip or sage for their homeworld.

Check out this site, and the relevant section:

http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/aliens.php

In brief: they ain't gonna look like Mister Spock, they won't be after our planet's water, and the chances of encountering them while our current civilization exists is extremely remote.

Aw sweet. A thread about aliens, the very things after which I named myself.

I went to the UFO festival at Exeter, recently. It's sort of a joint Betty and Barney Hill / Exeter UFO sightings deal. It's hokey, but folks take pride in it, and it's great for people watching.

Anyway, if anyone's interested in hypothetical aliens, this is the source: http://www.xenology.info/Xeno.htm

World-builders, don't leave home without it.
