And the first reaction I had was...

  • Robert Kerman voice while smoking a pipe* "I wonder who the REAL AUDIENCE IS?".

Really? They're doing this? Did they run out of ideas for Nazisploitation films so they started going for the next logical step in the Grindhouse Rolodex and think "Let's greenlight not one, but TWO movies in an exploitation subgenre so controversial and associated with racism and animal cruelty that the subgenre died soon after the original run of films failed to top the previous excesses?".

Eli Roth is making a cannibal movie. And there's someone else making one. None of these appear to be remakes. This is a good sign but let's just say Mondo Holocausto! sounds much, much more compelling/more like The Man From Deep River instead of ripping off Cannibal Holocaust directly and I'd probably go see it if it was playing in my area over Eli Roth's take on the subject matter.

There's only two subgenres of the kind of Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse revival bait that modern filmmakers haven't touched if I can tell any better than you guys, actual Mondo Shockumentaries and Nanjing-sploitation. And let's just say that while the NEW cannibal movies coming out are a very real sign that modern Shockumentary parodies may yet be released, after the Japan tsunamis and earthquakes and the gun rattling tension between Japan and China right now, we're probably not gonna see a remake of Men Behind The Sun or worse, a new original movie aping that subject matter.

What do you guys think of this new development?

These hopefully won't be as bad as Welcome to the Jungle, another attempt at a Cannibal Film throwback.

Pretty sure Mondo films are still being made, they're just obscure and probably consist almost entirely of recycled content. Murder Collection V.1 was a throwback to them by Toetag Pictures of August Underground fame, though it was entirely staged (albeit still disturbing in parts).

There was a recent Men Behind the Sun-esque film called Philosophy of a Knife. It's about four hours long.
