The file "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32wmpsrcwp.dll" on my computer appears to be corrupted, since the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scanner crashes whenever it tries to read it. I also suspect that the supposed errors are causing slowdown on my computer whenever I download images from certain sites.

I've tried Google search, but all I can find are what I suspect to be poorly-translated ads for file repair programs. If anyone knows what I can do, or any reliable programs to download, please tell me.

My default advice is to backup all the files and programs you care about, then reformat your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. There comes a point where it's not worth the effort to figure out how to fix all the problems individually.

I download DLL files every so often because they're corrupt or just missing. Try replacing it with a fresh copy from a site like this one.

Whenever I run into a DLL problem, I just search up the name of the DLL and download a copy from the first result that says "download foo.dll".

[up]How do I install the DLL file from there?

Backup, reformat, re-install.

Go with Linux Mint because it's pretty and more stable than Windows.

The fact that a .dll file from system32 means your OS probably isn't recoverable.

Do you have a system repair disc or your original Windows disc? Boot from DVD and choose "Repair Windows".

  1. Load disc in drive
  2. go back to POST and enter BIOS setup
  3. switch the boot order so DVD comes first and save change
  4. Load into the Setup Menu
  5. Choose "Repair Windows Installation"

If you're using 7, make use of the System Image function to "burn" an Image you can recover from from Control Panel, or learn to use ImageX to create and apply system images (available from Microsoft's websites typically included with the Automated Windows Deployment Toolkit).

If you're using 8, there's a hidden option for "Windows 7 tools" inside Control Panel that lets you use Windows 7's System Image tool from the Control Panel on the Desktop, and you can also apple ImageX because 8 is Image friendly like 7.

[up] Just download it and put it in the appropriate folder. There is gonna be a dialog that says "Are you totally sure you wanna do this?" and you tell it to shut up and do it. Chose the "Copy and replace" option, assuming you are on windows 7.

Also, be advised. Some other files may sponatenously start to fail, so you might want to reinstall windows. Lucky for you, it comes with an option to keep your old stuff as backup so getting rid of everything is not going to be as traumatic.

Get CHKDSK or Scandisk to check your drive for issues, and if possible defragment. Your machine sounds like it needs maintenance badly.

I've heard with Linux you supposedly don't need an antivirus installed, it's so stable.

If you want to roll without an AV, you need to keep your system security pretty tight and be very careful not to let software take too many permissions without your vigilance, mind.

[up][up] This is true. There aren't viruses for Linux. The only ones that exist were experiments to see if one could create a virus on Linux.

Untrue, if a dedicated blackhat wanted in they can exploit whatever kernel flaws exist to steal Superuser from you even in Linux or any *NIX.

Windows is only "easier" because all current versions of Windows use a similar NT kernel and there is big, well-paying demand for exploits that break into Windows's inbuilt security features.

Almost all software for Linux is in the software center (program where you download software). All the software in the center is approved to be virus-free. You'd have to download it from an outside source, and then you'd have to mark it as executable. Marking it as an executable is something relatively experienced users do. An experienced user would see the tell tale signs of a virus before they'd mark it as an executable.

Furthermore, you'd have to give it root privileges. Again, experienced users do this.

You'd literally have to go looking for viruses to get yourself infected.

And it would have to be a virus for your specific version of Linux. A virus written for Fedora would not work for Debian.

Guys, this thread is about reliable computer help. Changing to a new version of Windows is hard enough as it is, let alone changing to Linux.

Malware can still get in through the Internet, unless you run your browser extremely strict. Infected ad or DDL servers, driveby infections, and other stuff like that exists.

[up] Not exactly true if you make proper backups, since Vista, 7 and 8 use the same NT kernel with incrmental upgrades.

You tried running Repair Windows off the DVD yet Gex?

Google search with your DLL

[up] I assume Gex doesn't have the windows DVD cause that version of windows came with the computer. Needless to say, that sucks.

IIRC he should be able to use any Windows installer disc as long as he sticks to his OEM product key.

I kept the OEM OS disk I bought for my custom desktop :V My colleagues at my last job gave me an additional OS installer media disk with Windows 7, which doesn't have a product key.

Well, I haven't seen a disk since I live in Mexico and people here don't exactly get windows legally.

Most of the time when you buy a computer it already comes with windows. If you buy a custom computer they always have a shifty version of windows.

And if something fails the "Guy that knows computers" always has a shifty installation disk at the ready.

They don't automatically give you a recovery disc anymore, they partition your hard drive and put a recovery sector on it.

Hard drives still give best volume-per-dollar ratio, and cheap flash drives are painfully slow.

Anyways, it's possible to "burn" Windows 7 Install media onto a flash drive, there are some tech sites that detail how.
