I've actually watched that scene and the movie several times before. I know that the soot sprites are yokai. Is there any way to develop them?

The only way I know of to create youkai from general Japanese folklore is age. Anything that it continuously used for a hundred years will gain awareness and become a youkai.

I'm doing my Capstone Project on Japanese yokai, and half of it involves inventing my own yokai.
What I want to do is make some Yokai based on Hayao Miyazaki's movies, and I'm already aware the soot sprites are a yokai.
Can anyone help me with my concepts?
