And then there is that "Be yourself" aesop that's pretty much everywhere.
That one is badly phrased. It's less "remain the way you are" and more "don't pretend to be something you're not". I've had friends who lived lies for years. It almost drove them mad.
That's also true for boys, though, especially in modern plots. The girl needs to clean up nicely, the boy needs to do something badass and prove his worth as a man. Both kind of suck.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. You know, the boy thing is relatively new. Back in the good ole days it was the social responsability of the girl to make the boy like her.
What, even if the boy sucked in every possible way?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Oh, back then boys in fiction didn't suck.
Or more to the point, boys who suck didn't appear in fiction.

No, they did appear, girls just didn't want to marry them.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
To get a guy to like you, change who you are!
And marriage at 16 is completely acceptable!
