[up]That one is badly phrased. It's less "remain the way you are" and more "don't pretend to be something you're not". I've had friends who lived lies for years. It almost drove them mad.

[up][up]That's also true for boys, though, especially in modern plots. The girl needs to clean up nicely, the boy needs to do something badass and prove his worth as a man. Both kind of suck.

Oh, back then boys in fiction didn't suck.

Or more to the point, boys who suck didn't appear in fiction.
