Okay, so I'm working on a fanfiction story crossing the Simpsons universe with a certain equine-related flash animated series. While I'm making progress with most of the story aspects, one little trivial bit that I'm having trouble with is setting the time period of the story.

The Simpsons is a 24-year old show with a Negative Continuity, and the way I'm trying to treat the Simpsons universe in my story is to cut & paste events of the most memorable Simpsons episodes together (before Season 10) so that they'll fit within a two year span. The problem though is figuring out which year to place it.

While I could set the story in present day to make modern pop-culture references easier (like the current Simpsons), I always had a fond thing for the classic Simpsons, and I always liked to stick with the original despite the fact the actual show pushes the dates of the show’s events forward. Still, if I do that the reader may have to put up with numerous 90s references that they may or may not know of, so one solution is to not mention the time period at all, and present Springfield in an extremely timeless setting where the year is ambiguous.

Anybody want to throw their two cents at this? Which choice do you prefer? Late-90s? Modern Day? Archie-esque timelessness?

Fan fiction subforum is right here buddy.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.
