Kind of sad, but this is one of the few books I read for leisure that wasn't required for school. But it's still one of my favorites.

Now that it's getting a film by Ang Lee, I'm somewhat excited. More "somewhat" because the book was quite introspective and fantastical. The movie trailer looks kinda heavy on the cgi, but I won't judge too much.

Thoughts?

Cautiously optimistic. This book always struck me as the kind of tale that would be somewhat difficult to translate to a feature film - for one you'd need a director who isn't afraid to be tell a story in a very atypical way.

I'm not familiar with Ang Lee, so for all I know he could be that director.

Fairly acclaimed director from Taiwan, was a classmate of Spike Lee at Tisch. He's perhaps best known for Brokeback Mountain, but he's also done Hulk, Sense and Sensibility, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

[up][up][up] Well, if one of the production companies is an effects studio (Rhythm And Hues here). I'm expecting there to be a CG heavy film.

I had to read the book for school and didn't particularly like it. It actually seems like it could be a good movie though, but I hope the CGI isn't too obvious.

I wouldn't put too much hope into it,the guy did direct Hulk after all,yes that Hulk. Not the 2008 one with Edward Norton, that really ugly looking, wacky one.

The only certain bright side is now M Night can't touch it after trying to for many years.

^ Agreed. It's not like every director has across the board smash hits.

And from what I hear about Ang Lee's Hulk, the reasons people didn't flock to it probably wouldn't be much of a problem when it comes to Life Of Pi - they're just two very different kinds of movies.

And Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was absolutely amazing. So I'm pretty hopeful about this movie.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

For all the problems the 2003 Hulk movie (and yes, there are a lot of problems), directorial control is either not on the list or very low. Lee's got enough brownie points on his record to not have something like that hold him back.

As for the movie itself, color me uninterested, though I do have to give the movie props for the lengths its going to keep the casting international. It takes either a ton of money or a ton of balls to keep Hollywood's grubby paws away from the casting, and I respect it for that.

Was this the one with the tiger and the kid and the island with the burning ground or something? I remember my english teacher telling us about it in 10th grade and saying she hated the book until she understood it then it was better.

and wow it is.

Ang Lee's an excellent director (I've got his Sense and Sensibility, which I'd argue is better than the original book - though that's a combination of his directing skill and Emma Thompson's exceptional screenwriting). It's not really a surprise that his talents with character work, drama and cinematography wouldn't translate especially well to a comic book movie that would appeal to fans.

He seems like the right kind of person for this project, and it's getting good reviews.

Saw the trailer for this.

Not enough radii.

In all seriousness, am going to watch this at some point. I definitely think that this is the sort of movie Ang Lee would be good at.

I keep hearing positive reviews about this movie centering around its great visuals and saying it's "the next Avatar". Am I the only one who thinks that if you were going to make a good movie without excessive CGI and impressive visuals, then this would be the adaptation to do it? I mean, why not use live animals, instead of a hollow, artificial CG tiger? This is the perfect movie to use old-school, realistic techniques for. I can't remember the book focusing at all on fantastic visuals, more on the harsh, gritty realism of the situation, and the strength of the main character.

The last hurrah? Nah, I'd do it again.

[up] Well, there's the fact that real animals are hard to control. Especially since the tiger is essentially a main character. I mean it's not like the tiger has lines, but even so, there are times when it's supposed to be walking, then sleeping, which would be hard to get a tiger to do. Even before CGI, they probably would have used an animatronic tiger.
