This useful note appears to be launched prematurely with only two hats and no discussion.

Proof: [1]

Besides, even if it's okay to launch useful notes like that, it still needs to be proof edited for it to be neat and tidy.

Also, the title doesn't explain to me that the article is talking about Vietnamese armies, as I don't know what a Kalashnikov is.

The K in AK-47 is for Kalishnakov. It's the name of the original designer.

[up]Yeah, but you need to be a genius when it comes to military to know that.

<tangent> ... or live in any part of the world where AK-47s are simply known as Kalashnikovs </tangent>

Nevertheless, this page has some problems. Mainly, it focuses on describing the Vietnamese army, with any use in fiction a seeming afterthought. Admittedly, it shares this problem with other Useful Notes pages on armies.

Perhaps we should add quirks about what really distinguish an army or another...such as customs or gags about them.

[up]It would seem that the tradition is to name all the national military useful notes pages using some sort of marginally-witty gag, although it's often a forced pun or nonsensical alliteration (what kind of sense does Norwegians With No Ammo make anyway?).

[up][up]I was under the impression that useful notes itself is there to inform the reader about the subject with an eye toward helping audiences to understand references and writers to be more accurate with their subject matter. It doesn't have to directly relate to the subject's use in fiction like a real trope page would.

This.

Well, Charlies with insert here would do, too.

BTW, I noticed that the Finnish military page was exclusively focused on the Winter War. Give it a modern description as well.

I bump this thread, because I notice that nitrokitty renamed the page to UsefulNotes.Charlies With Cannons. (The redirect from UsefulNotes.Vietnamese With Kalashnikovs was broken, but I fixed it.)

Does the Trope Repair Shop need to do anything else to this page?

Ugh, I think that was a bad choice. I think the term "Charlies" is considered to be mildly offensive. Nor do I think that cannons is what they're known for. I think the original name was better. UsefulNotes.Vietnamese With Automatic Rifles if "Kalishnikov" is considered too obscure. Or even UsefulNotes.Vietnamese With A K47s.

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

Yeah, this name didn't need changing, to be honest.

  1. There was no consensus to rename, so I reverted it.
  2. The name is fine. Kalashnikov is a well-known word. You don't need to be a military genius. The guns are known as kalashnikovs in many countries.

This doesn't need any other help. Locking it up.
