This was talked about a while back in the Election thread, but new information has come to light, so I figured I'd make a thread for it.

Operation Fast and Furious was an ATF operation attempting to stem the flow of illegal guns being smuggled out of Arizona—a very difficult prospect, considering the state has extremely lax gun laws. Things got heated when several of said guns were used to kill police officers, and the case got national attention.

Not only did the justice department admit that many of their own people screwed up, but Attorney General Eric Holder was not faulted—when before he seemed about half a step away from being disbarred.

The report found no evidence that Holder was informed about the Fast and Furious operation before Jan. 31, 2011, or that the attorney general was told about the much-disputed gun-walking tactic employed by the ATF.

The actual report by Inspector General Michael Horowitz is apparently 471 pages long, so no one is even bothering to link to it. Still, at least it shows that he's willing to take the time and effort necessary to properly investigate this whole debacle, rather than just naming a few names and calling it a day.

Also, if someone could link the article investigating the whole case in more detail, I'll add it to the OP. I believe it was a thinkprogress article, but I'm not sure.

Don't let the article speak for itself. Please add a brief summary of the main points in it.
