Egg noodles are 1.40 for a pound.

(No, I'm not an impoverished single mother who's been in college the past 9 years tongue)

Again, if people care enough to make it a priority they will. Kroger is a well respected store brand which I see people buy a lot of.

And we really can't make our food that much cheaper without burning a lot of people. Midget and I already pointed out how NAFTA fucking South America is the only reason we get our fruit so cheap. We are still technically under drought so our meats have gone up as well as our wheat products.

The world is in a tight spot. People need to get that through their skulls. We are going to have to tighten our brains and our belts a bit.

Walmart has Great Value brand, Midge'. Look for the white packaging with blue letters next time you're out. They're not terrible, and on a college student's budget, that's one of those "it'll have to do" things, yeh?

They lost me. Forgot me. Made you from parts of me. If you're the One, my father's son, what am I supposed to be?

Since I suddenly have a very bad feeling that way too many people think that just cause he or she exercises a lot, he can eat whatever he wants...

N.O. - athletes still have to watch what they put into their bodies. Fortunately, since they already put in a lot of work on their bods, they're extra-mindful about junk food.

That Insanity Workout, for example, comes with a diet plan.

Following the diet is imho actually the (way) harder part than the exercise. Exercise, just plop in dvd and struggle for about an hour.

The Diet - go to the market, buy the ingredients, follow the recipes for 6 meals/snacks per day. If you're eating junk food, the exercise ain't going to cut the fat.

Of course you'd rather eat shit foods instead of healthy foods, shit food tastes awesome.

I disagree with this. If you ask me to eat Mc Donalds or any other fast foods every day I will probably throw up. If you ask me to eat potato chips enough for a meal I'll feel sick. Just because it is junk food does not mean that it will taste better than every healthy food. Let's not make a healthy lifestyle sound harder than it actually is.

I'm just saying, crappy food often tastes good. I'll take some chili dogs from Wienerschnitzel over any healthy food any day if it's taste I'm looking for.

speaking of this reminds me of the dearly missed Supersize that was done in by that horrid Supersize Me "documentary"

i loved the giant fries, soda/shake, etc.(the mccafe shamrock shake is about half the size of the older ones) i always bought supersize when eating mcdees, but i'm not overweight.

of course i don't eat fast food three times a day for months at a time. I do frequent subway and Tilted Kilt though.

@Ira: it depends on your upbringing, really from what we know science wise. If you've eaten mcdonalds since birth, they're going to taste way better than the carrots and peas you didn't eat.

Junk food is engineered to taste addictively good. There's a whole industry behind it where they work on getting you to eat "just one more." Supermarkets are also set up in such a way that the fresh foods, fruits, meats, vegetables are further away from the check-out counters while processed food are conveniently close.

USA's healthcare / safety net isn't going to last long.

I am pro-safety net. I want people who (really) need help to get help, but dang... safety nets shouldn't be encouraging people to be "disabled". People are supposed to want to cross the wire safely, not deliberately let themselves fall.

I dunno... has the USA government at least tried to make food stamps invalid for junk food?

Considering theres a shitload of lobbying money from junk food providers, I'd guess no.

There's also the problem that in many inner city neighbourhoods, i.e. the ones primarily on food stamps, there's no place to buy nonjunk food. There aren't grocery stores. There aren't farmer's markets. The only place to really get anything are places like gas stations and convince stores. They are what are called Food Desserts and they're one of the biggest centres of the obesity epidemic. There is no access to healthy food for the people in those places.

They try to limit what food stamps will buy. Like walmart's deli section of fried foods isn't covered. Mainly it's restriction by business. Fast food isn't covered. Etc.

Now they did try to keep sodas off food stamps and people pitched a fit. The main argument is it's my money and I should spend it how I want.

Before there was the EBT card which actually looks and acts like a debit card, food stamps were actual stamps that were for certain things like milk, cheese, so many ounces of meats, etc. But they got rid of that because it was embarassing.

And inconvenient as hell from what I've heard. If the computer can remember what is covered and what isn't then there's no point in making the cashier check for these stamps.

Isn't there also the basic logistical difficult of the fact that people could just buy something they know someone else wants and then trade it for cash? Then they use the cash to buy whatever the hell they want.

The current WIC program is exactly what food stamps used to be.

You had a piece of papar larger than a personal check that says what it is worth:

1 gallon, whole, skim or ff milk 1 lb yellow cheese 1 dozen large eggs

Etc.

Not every store had computers (mom and pop) so they could use food stamps too.

It's just it took time to go through this, it was a target of harassment, and so they put it on a card.

As an aside from a former supermarket cashier, yes the old "supersize" checks were a pain in the ass to process, especially if the customer didn't have their figurative shit together and had to run back to exchange items that weren't actually covered for stuff that was (not all that uncommon, in my experience). tongue

(I'm not so sure that reducing the visual impact and "embarrassment" level was the best of ideas, but that's another thread completely.)

But the thing about that was that people had to get healthy food.

Like I said, even with moving to the EBT card, they still have it where some things are not covered and it wouldn't have been hard to ban more things.

You can't buy alcohol with EBT. You can't buy deli or like in store fast foods (like if there is a Subway or a Mc Donalds inside the grocery store). It would not be hard to limit even the amount of soda or fatty foods people buy. If anything, with it being purely electronic it would be easier.

But people complained. People said it wasn't their business. People did what they did against the Soda Ban in New York. But here is the thing, their money is coming out of the state. So if anything, being on disability, EBT, etc. then yes, there is a right to limit what you can get.

I didn't pay for my college. I got scholarships. And as much as I hated taking 15 hours a semester when my college only required 9, but my scholarship required 15. So I shut up and took the 15 hours, kept my GPA up, and am about to graduate with a Master's.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with people getting aid. But that aid should come with stipulations to not only prevent abuse but to also give the most benefit besides just flat aid.

There is NO reason to go back to the annoying Food stamps system. If you want to reduce the amount of junk food covered by EBT go ahead, but don't go back to the checks. The WIC checks are annoying enough when they do come up but full grocery orders? Just remove the junk food from the EBT.

No one is saying we need to go back to checks.

And every attempt to limit junk food on EBT was struck down.

Well, thats what happens when half the lawmakers and their constituents view any sort of aid other than letting people have the freedom to die poor and diseased for not being capable of bootstrapping their way to success as "lazy moochers who need to die"

You get an interesting dichotomy of the same people who value freedom from government intervention also listening to food companies who want people buying 50 lb bags of doritos.
