I've noticed how lately Video Games have a list of achievements you can get, which involve getting a number of some item, actually getting a specific item, and so on.

Does anyone know what the first VG was to start putting up an achievement list and when that happened? Does an achievement list add replay value to a game?

I'm pretty sure the first widespread use of the achievements system as we know it was when the Xbox 360 rolled out. Every game from the start had achievements.

As for the concept itself, I enjoy it. It harkens back to the old days when you used to brag about being able to do some awesome thing in a game, only now you can back it up. The really good achievements can sometimes reveal new things about a game or challenge a person to play differently, like ones that say to win a fight without using a certain move. Also, they're largely cosmetic, so if one of them isn't my cup of tea, I can just ignore it.
