"You don't have to do that, it's not like you stepped on the sandwich yourself. Besides, don't you need to get your own lunch?"

— Honda Masanori —

"You've got a good spirit don'tcha?" Citadel said as he countered Forest's charge with his own, raising his left arm above his head, leaving his left torso exposed.

Forest Aspis

Aspis did not take the opportunity, instead she dashed her left, preferring to strike a guarded target from the safety that her long reaching spear gave her and then dash away... She was testing his defense. How much damage a normal hit from her spear would make on the mighty looking Duel Avatar.

"Ah, that's right." Hisako rubbed her head. She clicked a window upon her neuro-linker interface, showing that the lunch break is almost over.

Hisako took a deep breath, "There's little point in buying lunch now, they'll get cold when the next break comes around."

— Mori Ryota —

"Is it really that late already?" Ryota asked aloud as he checked his own clock. "Oh well, I guess I'll have to get those pictures for Senpai after school. I was hoping to get it over with though."

— Honda Masanori —

"Dammit," Masanori thought as his fingers closed just inches from his opponnent's weapon. The attempted spear grab would have ended better had she come from the other side. The attack itself had done only scratch damage, 5-6% at most.

"She has speed and range, how am I gonna counter that?"

Masanori scanned the area around him. Then he saw it, right behind Apsis.

"I hope you're ready for this," the Steel Citadel shouted as he began charging straight at Forest Apsis, leaping as high as he closed in.

Forest Aspis

Such little damage. Even for a gracing strike that was quite some defense he boasted. His size did seem to be representative of his resilience... as expected of Steel.

Seeing the great avatar then charge towards her, made it so that Aspis had to dig into her reserves of courage to pull off her next move. Just as soon as he was closer she dug her feet in as hard as she could, lowering her posture. Then she grabbed her spear and shield tight... holding her shield before her to be seen diagonally from the side. She held her spear back and prepared for the collision. When Citadel was close enough she would try to stab at him, and use his momentum to make him fly right over her with both her shield and spear.

— Honda Masanori —

The green avatar's plan worked perfectly, as poor Masanori was sent hurtling over Forest Apsis, colliding with a mid sized tree behind her hard enough to snap it at the base. With a thunderous crash both the steel avatar and the tree hit the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.

For a moment nothing happened. Steel Citadel's life bar had been reduced to around 65% between Apsis' spear maneuver and the resulting crash. It was a decent hit, giving Apsis a clear advantage in terms of remaining health.

Just as the dust was about to settle, a long dark shape, still somewhat obscured by the dust, came swinging towards Forest Apsis.

"And just who has the range advantage now?" Citadel shouted, as he swung the ~8 meter long fractured tree horizontally towards his opponent.

Just as he was going to enter gym class, dressed in the female P.E uniform of course, the world froze for Hayate and he found himself watching a Brain Burst battle between Forest Aspis and Steel Citadel. Hayate had noted that both of them went to his school so he had put them both on his watchlist.

Forest Aspis

Oh, that a clever if risky move on part of Steel Citadel. Aspis was taken by surprise, and she could neither activate an ability or dodge the mighty strike of the 8 m long tree. However, if there was something he might have miscalculated on his ploy, it would be forgetting Aspis's color.

For she might be quick in her feet, for maybe her spear might give her range... But still, her color is a deep green. And while her body might appear lightly armored, her specialty, her true purpose is nothing more than defense.

And thus, she planted her feet deep in the ground and swung in reflex her shield to her left... colliding with a mighty crash against the tree, causing a deafening crash and making splinters and leaves fly out in all directions. However, at the end of the crash Aspis remained standing... her whole body barely moved a few inches to the side by the impact and her health gone down fifteen percent.

Without a single word from among the wreck caused by the crash she ran straight towards him, shield in her left hand scraping against the three trunk as she leveled her spear in her right towards him for a straight up impalement.

"Well, I think I can't loiter here any longer, so see ya later!" Hisako said. Almost immediately after, she ran to the opposite direction from whence she came, giving Ryota a wave of parting.

As she ran, a thought crossed her mind, ''"It seemed that we're both fighting to stay accelerated, but in that case, is he my enemy?"

Hibiki stared at his hands. Flesh-colored, non-metallic. Yep.

He was back in the real world.

The guy slumped beside him had his mouth wide open. Hibiki thought about closing it, but decided not to for sanitary reasons (there were visible trails of saliva). I don't have metal gloves in this world, he muses.

Hibiki wiped his glasses with his shirt, wondering how much time had passed. He always had trouble with that part of acceleration, converting real world time to Brain Burst time and vice versa. He was however somehow aware that lunch time wasn't over yet, so he hightailed it over to the cafeteria, fervently hoping for leftover bread. And maybe a chance encounter.

— Mori Ryota —

Never a normal day anymore, is there?

Ryota turned around and began to head back to class as well, making a mental note to stop by the tennis courts after school. The newspaper club president had asked him to get some pictures of them practicing so she could run a story about the upcoming tournament.

— Honda Masanori —

"Gaagh," Citadel screamed as he took the spear to the chest, knocking his health further down to just over a quarter.

The force of the blow knocked the tree out of his hands, and pierced him right through his abdomen. It would have been really painful if this kind of damage hadn't been a fairly normal occurrence during Masanori's battles. Keeping his wits about him, Steel Citadel quickly grabbed the shaft of the spear that was now lodged within him.

"Not... yet..." he said as his special gauge, despite not yet being full, began to empty slowly. "Not... yet... dammit..." he repeated, as he tried with all his might to snap Apsis' weapon in two.

Forest Aspis

"I must praise your endurance and quick wits, Citadel. Truly, you are an experience Burst Linker" says quietly and evenly the voice of Aspis as she looks at her spear while it is bent... already can she see the item's endurance going down. Her right hand tries to pull back on the spear, to twist it within the Steel giant... But she knows that against his strength she has no chance. The spear is doomed unless he lets go of it.

Instead, she raises her shield, aiming it edge first towards Steel's face... Before she strikes with it, again and again for as long as she's able to, relying on her first means of attack since the day she became a Burst Linker, way before she counted with her spear.

— Honda Masanori —

With a loud crack, the spear gave, leaving the spearhead lodged in Citadel's torso.

*clunk*

Apsis' first blow knocked Steel Citadel back for a moment. As she attempted a second shield strike, however, Citadel grabbed the shield that was being thrust towards him, intending to swing his opponent around into another nearby tree.

The battle now could be called a race against time. The lodged spearhead was slowly doing damage over time and Citadel would be out of health long before the match's time limit was reached. For Citadel to win he had to do enough damage to his opponent while his HP held out, whilst Apsis simply needed to survive long enough for the DoT to score her a victory.

Forest Aspis

Forest was in trouble now. Grievous miscalculation and great risks had left her without a means of defense as her body was flung like a rag doll against anything and everything on Citadel's reach.

She did not expect Citadel to catch hold of her shield before she drove him down to no health, and now she was paying the price. Slowly, but surely her health gauge was going down... and in no time she was down past the halfway point.

SPRING KNIGHT

"Wow... They are both really good!" Daisuke muttered as he watched the battle between Forest Aspis and Steel Citadel from a safe distance.

With leftover bread in hand, Hibiki made his way back to his classroom, deep in thought. I should have expected it. Of course she wouldn't be at the cafeteria, lunch time's already over anyway.

And right on cue: "Yo~ Having a late lunch?"

Hibiki suddenly swerved his head around to the— very welcome— sight of a short brunette grinning at him. "Y-yeah." He could feel his body tense up. "Uh... you too, Ai?"

The girl called Ai caught up to him. "Oh, I was at Music Club. You know how the president is."

"Ah, yeah." A pause. Needless to say, awkward. Maybe I shouldn't have wished for that chance encounter.

"You're suspiciously awkward right there, Hibiki." Hisako commented, without any mercy, from behind the boy, complete with a sly smile plastered on her face. "But I guess that's just what youth is all about, right?" She patted his shoulder lightly as she spoke.

She walked past Hibiki and faced the brown-haired girl, "Ai, can I get a copy of your math notes?" Hisako asked politely. "I've been slacking for a while in class today." She said, completely devoid of embarrassment.

Hibiki couldn't decide whether to be annoyed or to be thankful for Hisako's arrival.

He settled for exasperation. "What do you mean today?" he told Hisako. "You've always been a slacker."

Ai just smiled. "Nah, it's okay, it's no trouble at all." She gestures at the other girl. "I'll give them to you in the classroom then."

Hibiki couldn't decide whether to be annoyed or thankful that Ai didn't seem to have picked up anything from Hisako's comments about "youth".

He settled for narrow-eyed silence.

"You're being presumptuous," Hisako shook her head slightly, "I'm surprisingly diligent, when I'm not slacking." She puffed her chest slightly after she spoke, seemingly proud of something.

Then she shifted her sight back to Ai, "Thanks!" Hisako said, flashing a sincere smile at her.

Hisako walked into the classroom, surprisingly brim with energy although she missed the lunch break. She winked at Hibiki, and mentally said 'Good Luck' at the boy.

Truth be told, her reason of being in such high spirits is from her discovery of Brain Burst. She was itching to show it off to the two people she spoke to just now, but she figured that wasn't such a good idea, considering what Ryota told her.

— Honda Masanori —

Citadel continued swinging Aspis around, knocking her into what ever was convenient. At this point he was functioning mostly on instinct, like a predator shaking around its quarry.

Eventually, the steel behemoth lept into the air, aiming to slam Aspis into the ground underneath him as he landed.

Forest Aspis

It was at this moment when Forest acted. With all the damage she had received, by now her Special Gauge completely full. Given that her opponent was still holding her by the shield, she thought of a ploy to become free of his grasp.

"Troyan Wall!" cries the Green Duel Avatar... and suddenly, her mighty green shield shifted... and from it's sides manifested a powerful forcefield of green light, forcing Citadel's hand open as the force field formed itself in the form of an spectral replica of the Aspis, only trice as big.

With the grasp on her shield gone, Aspis tried to kick at Citadel's big frame to push herself away from him as they descended, putting her shield between them in her next move.

Hibiki watched Ai follow Hisako. He also caught Hisako winking at her, which he was pretty sure was teasing. Something like "Good luck!" probably. She sure is energetic though, he thought.

His eyes darted back to Ai, who was busy chatting with Hisako and, presumably, sifting through her files. She looked positively cute, with her short brown hair swirling over her shoulders. Good luck, huh. No kidding. Ai was smart, talented, friendly— she was approachable enough, but Hibiki often felt that she was also an ideal to attain.

In fact, he once felt that he could run all his life with all his strength and still never catch up to her.

Not anymore, though. If I can't catch up to her the way I am now, then I'll just have to accelerate!

... His Parent would probably laugh at him if he ever admitted that he agreed to Brain Burst because he wanted to impress a girl.

Hisako sat on her seat, letting out a long sigh. She browsed through her settings and set it so she doesn't automatically reject wireless file transfers. She set it that way by default since time to time an (embarassing) document with names like 'love letter.txt' will suddenly be sent to her, without any identity of the sender; and that grossed her out.

She purged those bad thoughts out by shaking her head mildly. "I wish I was as smart as you are, Ai..." Hisako said, staring at her eye to eye.

Then, she thought about what she just said, "Hey, do you think someone can suddenly become good at something?" Hisako asked Ai, slightly facing away from her. "If, and just if, someone you know suddenly surpassed you in what you're good at, how would you feel?" The look on Hisako's face turned serious as the question reached Ai's ears.

Ai was a friend of hers, a very good one. She had always been fine being behind her a few steps, "It can't be helped, she was just more talented." that was what she had always thought.

But now she had the power to surpass her, Acceleration. If it worked the way Hisako thought, than she will be able to cheat life itself, and obtain things that she otherwise would not be able to obtain. The power to accelerate, without a doubt, can be abused to surpass even the most talented people, who didn't have access to the power.

Besides, didn't her original plan screamed just that? By means of accelerating, she will win the upcoming tennis tournament, and use the money she obtained to help Akio's hospitalization funds.

Hisako knew that without Akio to constantly guide her, she will eventually use Acceleration without regard to others' feelings, that's just the way she was; spoiled and without remorse of what she had decided upon. That's why, before it was too late, she braved herself to ask Ai, albeit indirectly, on how she would feel.

Ai's finger froze in mid-air as her eyes studied Hisako's face. "Those are some weird things to ask about."

"Well, honestly, I don't think you can just become suddenly skilled at something," Ai said. "You'd have to put in some effort one way or another. And if someone suddenly does surpass me—" she sent Hisako her notes with a swipe of her hand— "I suppose I'd... feel excited?" Her face beamed.

Hibiki, who happened to overhear this conversation, once again felt admiration for the brown-haired girl.

"Like, I'd want to know how that person did it," Ai continued, while shrugging her shoulders. "I'd want to know how that person got that good, and I'd want to know if I could do it too."

— Honda Masanori —

Citadel rolled with the Aspis' kick, landing a decent distance away from his opponent.

Citadel stood up, panting. Based on his remaining health level, there was probably only time for one more attack. He began charging, readying himself for an all out attack.
