Be careful when asking people for preliminary ideas. They might ask to share the credit.
In seriousness, just google "creative writing prompts". There are a million lists.

Mind if I take a crack at it? Let's see here...if you're out to make some fantasy, then I'll try to keep my ideas tangentially related. Sooooooooooo...
- A young girl must escape from a cult before she's sacrificed to their god.
- A disease starts to sweep through a country, and a small group of survivors must figure out how to stop it.
- A researcher goes on an expedition to find remnants of an ancient civilization...and finds something beyond belief.
- A princess is cursed, and starts transforming into a dragon.
- Fairies — having grown weary of humans infringing their rights and territory — launch an assault on the populace.
- A warrior-king must prove himself to his people the only way he knows how: by killing a god.
- The world begins to fall apart, and the only way to stop it is to have the populace believe in the gods once more.
- A knight is abducted by a giant after a brutal battle, and must find a way to escape and rejoin his family.
Those are just a few things that I have on the top of my head. Hope they can help you out...and if all else fails, then write about superheroes. They're always cool.

For years I've wanted to write a dark fantasy epic, but I started when I had no idea how to write and I bit off way more than I could chew. I've ben trying smaller, but still large projects ever since. Because many published writers suggest starting small to gain skill, I thought I'd give it a try. To make a long story short so to speak, I'd like to get a few random ideas for a short story from anyone who would like to share any. I don't care how wierd, nonsensicle, or unrelated they are, I'll try anything out. Thanks.
