... I KNOW they did the comic for Big Hero 6, but ... the MARVEL animated TV shows are news to me! Which ones did they do exactly??

Finally saw the movie. It was shorter than I expected it to be but I loved it. I do wish they had expanded on the others outside of Hiro and Baymax though I can see why they would. I hope that stinger after the credits is hinting at a sequel because then maybe they will expand on Honey, Wasabi, Fred and Go Go more. Especially since their bonding early on in the movie feels a bit rushed so building on the characters would be great.

One issue about that that we have mentioned here before: there are rarely any official Disney animated canon sequels, which is odd considering different people make each one as the eras go by and yet they ALL seem to agree that too many sequels harms the timelessness of the line-up.

The last time they did sequels all it did was hurt the brand.

@kyun: I don't think they did the Marvel cartoons. I think they got their start at Marvel and branched out into their own animation projects.

..... It's arguable as to whether or not the events of Winnie the Pooh take place AFTER the events of the original movie, but it is basically a sequel. Its failure had less to do with it being a sequel, rather than it being marketed less, and released up against the last installment of a record-breaking blockbuster. Also, The Rescuers Down Under was a severe improvement over its predecessor in my opinion and seemed to do very well in the box office.

Or maybe the problem was Winnie-the-Pooh had already had too many sequels?

I would point out that the 2011 film was the only one of its sequels to be produced by Disney Animation Studios and is thus the only Pooh sequel in the canon line-up, but I keep forgetting that I'm talking about 2011 human beings who don't give a crap about who makes what anymore since they're so ignorant.

A superhero story is slightly better suited to sequels, to be fair. It's why everyone wanted an Incredibles sequel.

Then again, I'm not really how you can push this story in new directions. None of the ideas I have would be particularly emotionally resonant or NOT a rehash of some kind. That's what I like about Disney. They tell complete stories. I don't feel like they need to go any further on this.

Not that that has stopped them in the past, but one hopes they've learned.

If they're willing to go really, REALLY dark for a sequel, resurrect Tadashi as an Expy of Shadow Moon, and sick him on the Big Hero 6.

Now see, I really REALLY do not want Tadashi back. Kind of kills the point of the movie we have now.

Besides, that would be kind of like the Winter Soldier.

The difference between the two is Shadow Moon never breaks his programming. Of course, that's because he's a cyborg, not brainwashed. And he's the mortal body of an ancient god of destruction. Like I said, really dark.

[up]This. Tadashi is a Death by Origin Story dead. There's no coming back for him, unless they retcon the entire events of Big Hero.

Also, I could arguably see Big Hero 6 working as a television series as opposed to a full sequel (I'm saving that reserve for Wreck It Ralph). Or hell, just give it the Frozen treatment and have it appear on one of ABC's lesser television shows- like Agents Of Shield!

And really, if Tadashi isn't dead, then Hiro's character and emotional arc is for naught.

So I saw this yesterday and damn, Disney really brought their A-Game with subtlety here. This was a really good year for animated movies.

I agree an animated series would be the best option for a sequel. And there's so many ideas to explore:

-Did Tadashi have a relationship (even if a subtle one) with Gogo or Honey? Does she miss him?

-Speaking of Gogo, why is she such a speed freak?

-Allow Baymax to explore more of the world on its own!

-Wasabi might be revealed as the grandson of a certain restaurant owner in Louisiana. wink

-We must find out if Honey is Latina or not.

-Fred gets his feelings hurt by Gogo. Honey then sets out to restore his self-confidence (clash of the girls!)

-Will Callahan return? Will his daughter forgive him? Would Krey be a recurring character?

-Does Aunt Cass know what Hiro does, or does he still sneak behind her back? And hey, what about her love live, is it affected by having to raise Hiro?

-And possibly best of all: given the movie's stinger, it's entirely possible that it's set in the same universe as The Incredibles so a crossover could be a possibility!!

What do you think?

Well, Honey sounds like she is whenever she says Hiro's name, but the film never really makes it explicit.

And whatever you think of that particular decision, I like that they don't have to oversell the whole 'This is a DIVERSE group of characters doing SCIENCE' angle. It just gets on with it, and it feels perfectly natural.

Of course Gogo and Honey miss their friend who got exploded. There doesn't have to be a romantic relationship for them to be sad that someone is dead.

I think if one of the two was mourning the loss of Tadashi as their dead boyfriend throughout the film, that would have come up at some point already - especially since it creates a perspective contrast that would put that person closer to Hiro than the rest of Tadashi's friends in terms of grieving and pain.

On the other hand, the relationship could be recent enough that the sting of loss is more along the lines of losing a friend than a loved one, but if that were the case, then making him that character's boyfriend would be an utterly pointless plot point.

Currently, the only romantic relationships that exist in this movie are inside the heads of shippers, who have never met a character-who-is-never-shown-to-be-in-a-romantic-relationship they couldn't force into one.
