Friend's advice: Watch everything you can.

Result: Either get bored, get literally nothing out of the work, or do only Rule34 (particularly if cartoon).

Am I not trying enough? Is there anything out there to inspire me?

To me it sounds like you won't allow yourself to be inspired. Look back at the way you described the people at the store. Every single description was dismissive and insulting to them. You were looking for what was wrong with them, instead of looking at who they were. Nothing inspires you because nothing is good enough. Because you're looking for reasons to not be inspired.

And besides that, inspiration is by far the smaller part of writing. Writing and editing and re-writing and re-rewriting is much more of it.

[up]Inspiration is the main problem for me. I'm actually not concerned too much about writing, re-writing, editing, etc. (at least not now) since I've found I can usually handle that once I actually get an idea going. The problem is getting said ideas to go in the first place.
