Well having been in Canada in RIM-land (where you get rim jobs!), there's a lot more blackberries to see and overall the iPhone, for the same price, doesn't last as long. People who have phones die on them about once a year, usually is due to some unmentioned abuse (because you'll notice they'll complain about the brand, switch to another and have the same problem). The quality loss on blackberries is mostly about the lack of nice user programs but functionally, if you're using it for business it does everything you want. I've had Android (which is basically iPhone interface but more buggy :P) and I've had blackberry, the quality on the blackberry is much hardier but far less "fun". However, the blackberry is also like half the price so... yeah.

I believe you're entirely and hugely biased there, breadloaf.

From my experience so far, most current phones last reasonably well in most cases. I'd put a Blackberry and an iPhone both above the build quality of most Android devices, though. The Blackberry I had, I just wished it would die.

A brighter future for a darker age.

[up][up] It also comes down to personal preference. Some people (like Drunkscriblerian) vastly prefer the interface on iOS devices. Some (like myself) really really hate the interface on iOS devices and prefer something, anything, else.

To me, an iPhone is a piece of crap, but to Drunkscriblerian, my old HTC was a piece of crap.

For stuff like this, I'd say that personal preference is almost as important as durability and programming.

Nobody is keeping statistics on how well phones last so we all only have anecdotal evidence. Every iPhone I've seen begins to have serious operational problems somewhere in the range of 1-2 years but because most people replace their iPhones with newer models, it's hard to tell how long they actually last.

For blackberries, a lot of the people I know who have them is because they're less than half the price and are unable to afford iPhones. They also rely on the blackberry lasting long before getting a new phone, so they usually wait until it develops some hardware problem before replacing it. Of course, they end up complaining about some hardware problem of their $200-$300 blackberry as if it was supposed to last forever but that typically takes a really long time. Nowadays, nobody keeps the phone long enough before replacing it with a newer model however with RIM canning people left and right, the new models might not arrive for some time.

Actually one thing that always makes me cringe are cracked screens. Everybody I see with a smartphone eventually has a cracked screen. Although I've not seen a blackberry with a cracked screen yet I'm sure you could probably get one if you dropped it hard enough on some sharp rocks.

I personally do not see the point in buying smart phones. I prefer my candy bar Nokia, though I am never buying anything newer than the next gen from the 3110 Classic after being the world's supply of unimpressed with the Nokia C1-01 I bought recently. What point is there in having a massive 32Gb in possible SDHC storage for your mp3 files and have a shitty mp3 playback facility on the phone?
