As the sole defender of Arena/Undercover/Hopeless here, nyah.

As for Spider-Man, I'm fine with him keeping his secret identity, the comic was just more interesting when Mary Jane and Aunt May knew. I do think think they've should let Aunt May die, especially since she even said she knew what she was getting into but it looks like she's with JJJ's dad and they went off into the sunset? IDK.

And Bendis's semi-regular Friday Bomb Drops is...kissing X-Men. Not sure what Northstar is doing with Daken. Or even worse, Nightcrawler doing with Rogue...

[up][up][up]So because John Byrne fumbled the ball with Vision, it's somehow inherently bad to write a mostly She-Hulk-less She-Hulk story?

Because, well, that characterization of She-Hulk is kinda, well, Sue-ish. She's like the Hulk but with none of the problems he has. There's no room for personal conflict or growth, because it mostly got solved offscreen.

She's not as strong as the Hulk though.

Plus, we don't need 'the hulk but female.' Its cool that despite having the same power set she has her own issues to deal with.

[up]Except that She-Hulk's already gotten over her issues. We don't need her trying to overcome her issues again. We've already moved past that point.

[up]But then there's nothing for me to fanfic about. Having her be at that point is all fine and dandy in comics, but if I'm doing fanfiction, there has to be some sort of growth or change. I'm sure one fanfic where Jen spends most of her time tiny and pink and focuses more on being a lawyer than a superhero won't kill the character.

I'll echo the sentiment that Jen is interesting because she has her own problems. But there have been a few storylines where she's reverted to a Hulk-like personality, like the Search For She-Hulk storyline in Avengers.

I suppose personal conflict could come from how she splits her time.

There are a lot of lawyers and there are a lot of strong heroes. Should she be in court when she can help punch cosmic evil in its stupid space face? Or should she be space face punching when she can be making a difference in the courtroom?

I did throw in one issue I don't think writers have done before; I had this idea that Jen's been accused of using her Hulk powers to somehow influence legal proceedings, and even though we all know that's hogwash, that she'd never do anything that underhanded, it rattles her somewhat and leads to what I've been calling this "No Hulking during working hours" policy.

Wouldn't that prove the guy's point? That's also my problem with the idea, I almost immediately wrote myself into a corner on it, because if she does Hulk out on him, that'll prove his point, and if she continues down the plot I'm working on, it'd give them the satisfaction of shutting her up. Damn, this is hard, how do I resolve this without pulling it out of my ass that the other guy is actually a supervillain and negate the whole conflict?

Where she goes from there is to kill She-Hulk, apparently. If being She-Hulk objectively damages her legal career, than she either has to stop being a lawyer forever or stop being She-Hulk forever.

I like their assessment of Red Skull.

He’s not tragically misunderstood; he just wants to rule the world as the master race of the planet. You get the idea.

[up][up][up]I don't want to go that route. She's like my favorite superhero, but I'm just in a bind because I think I wrote up an idea that's too clever or something.

Maybe she uses her She-Hulk form to actually provide a witness with a sense of security. A guy's trying to testify against the Mob or something, and feels scared, until she switches to She-Hulk as a way of making him feel safe.

Asking Mutants, or otherwise physically changed people in the Marvel Universe, in She-Hulk form may actually be more comfortable and engaging than a "normal human"?

"Narrative collapse" is a term coined by Philip Sandifer in his TARDIS Eruditorum, initially to describe the impact the introduction of the Daleks had on Doctor Who. Generally speaking, "normal" conflict in a story threatens the well-being of the characters or their ability to accomplish their goals. A narrative collapse, on the other hand, is a conflict which threatens the ability of a long-form (usually serial) work to tell stories at all (and may or may not also threaten the well-being of the characters or their ability to accomplish their goals). Narrative collapses are usually (though not always) resolved, but always carry a heavy price, either for the characters or for the work itself.

This is very much what happens in the last two episodes of Evangelion. Characters blend into one another and interact with the medium; the passage of time is distorted; the lines between character perception and "objective" camera framing are blurred. Third Impact makes it impossible for the show to continue telling a story, but ultimately Shinji is able to resolve the conflict by realizing that his feelings are created by him and thus he has to take ownership and responsibility for them. This ends the narrative collapse, but at the cost of ending the series, meaning all other conflicts must be left unresolved.

A normal conflict might lead you to ask "How are they going to get out of this one." A narrative collapse leads you to ask "How are there episodes after this?"

Note that there are things other than narrative collapses which can provoke that response, though. Ending the main conflict of the series isn't in itself a narrative collapse, because it resolves a conflict rather than introducing one. That goes whether it's the protagonist or antagonist winning; either way it's a resolution, so even if that ends the series it's not a narrative collapse.

Some other good examples of narrative collapse: Doctor Who, "The Chase," the second Dalek story and the earliest example I know of. The series finale of Batman: The Brave and the Bold (a rare instance of an unresolved narrative collapse that actually kills the story). Friendship Is Magic, "The Return of Harmony," not so much for the scenes of physical chaos as the fact that the villain can rewrite character personalities at a will, causing the Mane Six to stop being friends for half an episode. Pretty much the entirety of the Madoka Magica movie Rebellion.

Pretty much the situation you've stumbled into, it seems.

[up]Well, crap. I seem to have initiated the mother of all narrative collapses. I can't even think of an Ass Pull to fix this situation. Certainly not one that'd either undo the character examination I was planning, or pull the conflict into non-issue territory.

[up][up]I did have the idea that she WOULD appear as She-Hulk during legal business involving superheroes and such. I know she was big and green for Professor X's will-reading.

[up][up][up]I think that'd work. Assuming that one slimeball (I can't decide if he's another lawyer or some kind of reporter or whistleblower) isn't there, or he tries to raise a scene there and it's caught on camera. I guess that would be the only way to resolve that arc is to let him do himself in.

Alternatively: Jennifer decides to really just sit down and think about what makes She-Hulk different from her. Because I never saw She-Hulk as something like The Hulk, an alternate personality, a force of nature. Just a different side of Jennifer herself. And the other thing that makes Jen different is that she chooses when she transforms, something that Bruce can't do without technological assistance. And the more Jennifer thinks about it, the more she realizes that there really are no differences. Jen if She-Hulk, She-Hulk is Jen. It's not a secret identity, it's not a costume. It's just a silly name she came up with when she was a kid. And by realizing and accepting that, she finds an inner peace and control of herself that Bruce could never dream of.
