Thats why this is one of of those series you read only after its been finished.
That would've been fine, except the cliffhangers are poor quality. For example, Akira doesn't show the others a picture of his mother because... "it can't be!". >.> Not to mention they don't really leave you hanging, more like you just want the story to get on with it already.
Three chapters left? Does that mean they'll live on the island for good?
Well, the raws for the latest chapter are out and... It doesn't answer much anyway.
The gist is that the crash was actually well-known — there's even a scene shown of Sengoku's mom drowning in her sorrows — however nothing was apparently found of the plane crash, as the plane disappeared over open ocean. Not sure about the rest though, but one can interpret two things (wildly different from each other): a) the plane literally experienced a time slip, and they're in the future, or b) they're all clones, and the island's true purpose (before things went to heck) was human cloning, to bring all the people who died in the crash back.
Choice A is more plausible.
Hmm, with the translation the cloning angle is gaining steam, but I have a feeling that we might get a combination of both: a time slip DID happen, and the island they landed in HAD a cloning project going that had its ultimate end to bring those who disappeared in the plane crash back to life, but the latter went horribly wrong somewhere along the way. What we're seeing now scattered on the island is the end results.
But... but... cloning doesn't work that way...
I think this reaction post from Asuki sums up the huge clusterfsk the series had become, especially with the curveball we're getting now:
Without a Lost type beam to bring the plane down and start a time loop there is nothing to tie the two technologies together. If you resurrected your precious family members you certainly would not drop them into a jungle filled with prehistoric carnivores and even more dangerous crazy people. If the virus ate the workers and transformed them into the students, why would it wait decades to activate? If the pods took that long to gestate, who scattered the passengers around the crash site?
How can these inconsistencies be rationalized in two weeks?
Or, y'know, they're not clones and just time travelled. 'Cause personally, I'm seeing the island as a gigantic gravestone used for other projects, not a resurrection capsule.
We shall see. Two chapters to go, and unless these are extra-length there's no way to wrap up every lose end... And there are a lot of those.
Aaaaaand the last chapter is out at Mangastream. And you know what? It answers ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. We get a short time skip, with everyone still stuck at the island, but finally able to get off because they now have a boat to leave with.

Myssa, please learn how to spoiler-tag things. Seriously.
Can't help it, it's not a thread that people usually visit.
And seriously, it's kind of a let-down. Literally nothing was answered.
Weren't that many question left, really. I mean, we don't know how they time travelled, or why they made the island, but most answers have been given.
/glances at Hades
…
Well, okay, but most answers anyone actually cares about have been given.
Not really: who is Hades? What happened to Sengoku's friend that was with him? How did the pilot know?I thionk a lot of people care about these questions, specially the last one.
This was cancelled right? It felt too rushed.
I wonder if the author is considering a sequel one day. The fact that he left the above questions unanswered and that he took his time in the last chapter to introduce a new character and to clearly point out Sakuma did not hook up with the president seem to imply that.

People theorize that it's a cancellation, but the way the publishers worded it (in Japanese) was that it was voluntary. Wish I could dig up the Yaoran article on it for reference.
And you know what's another big question unanswered? How did everyone's school uniforms survive 3 years of wear and tear?

Personally I never expected the time travel to be explained anyway, and it seems to me that the island was built just because. And because countries wanted to get a hold of that technology.
Yeah, there's a bunch of unanswered questions. Hades, how the pilot knew... but I doubt actual answers would have been satisfactory.
I actually am interested in a possible sequel though. It would be interesting to see what's happened with the rest of the world.
So it's just me that that doesn't give a damn about Hades then?
I mean, he's a crazy guy in a mask. I'll admit that the plot thread about Kou-chan* is pretty unresolved, but considering how Nishikori's plot thread was tied up, I'm not convinced that's a bad thing.
Shame, I expected a few more pages at least since it's the final chapter...
"And you must be Jonathan Joestar!" - Sue@Myssa: That thing about the clothes was the first thing on my mind too.
Also man yeah, this felt way too rushed. Maybe the author got bored of the series.
Well, we got a grown-up trap!Miina though, so all's good. (Where did he get those clothes anyway?)
Also WTF is Oomori wearing.
The thing with the clothes is weird, but then again, without that, they'd all basically be running around naked, so I just let that one go.
I think the constant stream of cliffhangers sorely tested the reading audience's patience, really.
