So it seems the votes very thoroughly discredit this trope applying to extraneous collectibles outside of bonus stages that lead to alternate (and often better) endings (that is, I'm the only one who voted the title without "stage" in it up).
So if they're not this trope, what trope are they? Surely we already have that, and I'm just missing it...
