tweet from Alex Hirsch, Josh Weinstein (co-showrunner for The Simpsons during its 7th and 8th seasons) is now a writer for Gravity Falls.

Technically it's just 'Take Gravity Falls characters and place them in opposite roles where available and opposite characteristics for the rest'. The Twins being sociopaths is just something that happened once people realized how fun it was to go for broke with Gideon's set up with the Standards removed.

So I'm new to this series and I just noticed there's a coded message at the end of each epsiode. Also something is played in reverse at the end of the theme song

Apparently the coded messages in the credits will actually be plot-relevant next season. In season one they tended to just be goofy little jokes.
The backwards message in the theme corresponds with how to decode the credits cryptogram—"three letters back", "switch A with Z", and "26 letters", depending on whether the episode's using Caesar, Atbash, or A 1 Z 26, respectively.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Yeah, so I finally got around to starting to watch this. I'm only like 4 episodes in, but I really like it so far. Just the right balance of creepy and humor. You really wouldn't expect a Disney show to go the "It's funny because marriage is terrible" route. Hopefully I can finish season 1 before season 2 starts.
