I like the second one. It has that old-timey quaint feeling.
I think it should be standard practice to post what's currently on the page. Current:
I think the second image in the OP (1.2, woodcut? illustration?) is better than the photo (1.1) and the current image. Much more succinct than the comic, and the photo is staged-/fakey-/lame-looking IMO.

...don't see anything wise-looking. Whether the image is good is way more important than whether the example is good, like vital versus unimportant.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. There's always Kaepora Gaebora from Ocarina Of Time/Majoras Mask, although I'm not sure how good that would be as an image.

I like the second one of the OP for the same reason as Kaiser.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."1.2 is awesome.
The second one in the OP is great; the first is too clearly 'shopped. The current could be adapted into a page quote.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. My vote goes to the second one, too. The current one shows the owl having a beard but it doesn't really show its intelligence.
I can't think of anything good for a signature.1.2
The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything. That's good enough. 1.2 is up and tagged. Caption or no?

Well, here is the page it was found on. Should we pothole to it in the image or in a caption?
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartIf no one comes up with a caption, we can pothole it in the image link.
From some reason "The owls are not what they seem." comes to mind, but it doesn't fit with any of the pictures shown.
"Pancakes. Oh, I blew it." - Joel Hodgson Nobody better lay a Butterfinger on my 3DS!Hearing nothing, let's just run with it as is. Locking up.
It seems too dependent on text, with too little visual indication of the trope. Looking up "wise owl" on google image search yields many better images, but here are a couple specific ones:
