So a recent report by CBC comparing the three standard oil prices:

  • Brent Crude (Europe)
  • West Texas Intermediate (US)
  • Western Canadian Select (Canada)

Showed that Canadian oil prices are the lowest of them all. The report believes that the cost of transporting Canadian oil to the market is the highest of the three causing barrel prices to be lower.

That being said, I have a different question to talk about in light of the barrel price talk.

Should Canada nationalize its oil industry again? Bring back Petro Canada? Where are all the profits of the oil industry going?

It would be lovely to do so just to break the back of the Alberta oil lobby that has been driving this country into the ground at Mach 3 for far too long.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

I actually think they *should* nationalize it. So should the United States, even though they don't have the balls to actually do it - because in these countries the oil industry is doing huge amounts of harm and not very much good.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Well there's several problems to me:

  • US/China buying up our natural resources at bargain prices, extracting it and then leaving our country in a mess. We don't even sell them our oil, we sell them the rights to our oil which is even worse.

  • All the profits go where? Certainly not Canadians. At best it goes to this top 0.000001% of the population. We don't get roads, we don't get infrastructure investment, we don't get R&D, we don't get public investment in our education, we get nothing. It goes to buy hookers and blow to satisfy the unnecessary wants of a bunch of rich guys, and by a bunch, I literally mean that. There's probably only a handful of people who enjoy 99% of the profits.

  • What do we do when the oil runs out? We're literally throwing away our future, and not even for a short-term gain, the Harper government is literally just giving away all our future earnings for absolutely nothing and smile smugly on camera on how awesome they were about following free market ideology.

No. If Canada has such an important resource, they shouldn't give it away cheaply

lol is this my brother posting? You sound exactly like him.

The problem with nationalizing is that the US and Canada would pretty much have to go against one of their biggest lobbies and essentially convince a whole lot of people to stop liking money.

Our lobby isn't that large and almost entirely foreign Chinese and American businessmen. So perhaps CSIS was right about our government being infiltrated by foreigners... except when they pointed the finger at the Chinese, what they really meant was that it was Chinese and Americans, and rather than the Liberals or NDP being the ones affected, it's really the ruling Tories.
