I've played some SNES Shadowrun recently in the wake of this Kickstarter. and it felt like playing a shoddy mobile RPG from the mid-'00s. Not getting a lot of universe specific vibes from it either. I heard the Genesis game is better, so I might just dump this one.
I still want to support this Kickstarter. because I've read about Jordan and he looks like someone who can get things done. Is reading a Shadowrun novel a better option than one of the games for understanding whether or not I'd like a game set in it?

Playing the pen and paper game with a dedicated group is most likely to give you a real Shadowrun experience. A lot of Shadowrunners are mercs and criminals, not epic heroes drastically reshaping the world, which is what the books I've read felt like. Of course, that was years and years ago...
Also, I quite like the SNES game, but then again I'm a sucker for cyberpunk.
OTOH, its nice to have the *option* of being said epic heroes, either instead of or after a career of self-interested crime. . .

Eh... as much as I'd like to agree, Shadowrun is about the petty criminals and mercenaries, not the heroes. Heroes don't get paid.
That said, I'm impressed by the character options on offer. I would have liked having the full run of Shadowrun classes (Physicals adepts! Otaku! Faces!) but Samurai/Mage/Shaman/Decker/Rigger are perfectly fine. I'm absolutely going to main a Shaman; here's hoping I'll be able to keep him/her alive...
That depends entirely on how you do your heroing. If your really clever, you can get someone to pay you to do what you'd otherwise do for free ( like killing Big A ). ;)
Home of CBR Rumbles-in-Exile: rumbles.fr.yuku.comHaha, fine, let's say that heroing doesn't pay well consistently.
Kick Starter needs its own trope page.
I'll do it.
Aaand 'done'. Yes, it's quite awful for now but I'm still working on it. Feel free to improve it, that's what wikis are for.
Holy!!! this game has over one millon dollars on backers!
Shadowrun is a well regarded IP so it makes sense.
Funding past 1.5M, new player class at 1.75.
Oh, and by popular demand that exclusive mission is now a timed exclusive.
Finished at $1.89M including other sources.
Jonah FalconWonderful!
There's a certain similarity there with the Wasteland 2 gameplay video.
Jonah FalconThat looked freaking awesome!
I'm so glad I backed this game.
2013 is going to be a good year for rpgs.
Yeah, I just saw the alpha footage, and I'm pretty damn excited. Only four-ish months away too.
Could a sexy mod kindly change the thread name to Shadowrun Returns? Or, you know, any mod will do.

This post has been powered by avenging fury and a balanced diet. This looks glorious. Why didn't I hear about this earlier? I'm gonna go pre-order it right now.
What kills me is the detail. The player character in that video starts out on the street in front of the Pike Place Market, AD 2054... and not only do they have the neon signs right — the PUBLIC MARKET CENTER clock and the FARMERS MARKET sign — but right out on the sidewalk beneath the signs is that giant bronze piggy bank that sits out front (I saw it the last time I was in Seattle).

^^The great thing is that preordering it still gets it at the same price as the Kickstarter and you can still upgrade your 'pledge' etc.
I honestly kinda backed this on a whim and I'm really glad to see it turn out so surprisingly well. I've heard they didn't have the scope to implement a full inventory/loot system but it's more than made up for with all those cool abilities and strategies and the various approaches to each mission.
I'd have liked more classes, and I'm confused as to how hires work (can you talk to them? Do they have much personality?) but this looks very satisfying and exciting.

Fear the cinnamon sugar swirl. By the Gods, fear it, Laurence.
As someone who's completely broke at the moment but is interested in this game (despite not having played Shadowrun in any capacity before) I agree with the latter group's sentiment.
