Ah, good point. I usually just get to the threads via the watched thread list, so I didn't think about that.

CodeSpells—A fantasy game that aims to teach the principles of coding via a magic system that employs a "visual programming" interface. Overall it looks like a pretty neat idea, with a fair bit of scope for experimentation in the magic system.

Phoenix Dawn—A fantasy RPG with an unusual and lovely low-polygon-count art style.

Some of these projects seem quite conventional but old-school. Is turning to Kickstarter a way to bypass executives who insist on everything looking state-of-the-art and technically maxed out because it's all they can see?

A blog that gets updated on a geological timescale.

That's one reason to use crowdfunding, I daresay, albeit not the only one. I think that it's a little more general than that, however: crowdfunding is, amongst other things, a way of getting funding for projects that would be unlikely to be funded under the traditional publisher-based model, whether that's because they use old-fashioned art, are experimental, have a very niche audience, or for some other reason.

Nefarious, a game starring a villain with music by the creator of Brawl In The Family, is in its final minutes. It's really close right now, and could fall one way or the other.

Update: Funded!

Arcane Worlds: A "tactical FPS with flight and magic", and inspired by Magic Carpet.

I believe that it's also in Early Access on Steam; apparently that's not bringing in sufficient funding, hence the crowdfunding campaign.

At time of writing there's a free demo available on the game's website (it should be at this link); I've given it a quick play (I seem to be having some trouble on my Windows installation, I fear, and had some crashes that may have been either the game or my computer... :/), and I rather enjoyed what I saw. The movement feels good, the keyboard layout is effective, if perhaps a little cramped in places and the gameplay feels very like Magic Carpet. The aesthetic is rather different to Magic Carpet's—and rather lovely, I do think.

It's still rather early in development (I think that the current version number is 0.25), so it's a little rough in places, but I do like what I see thus far.

Everstar is an Action RPG for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It features a co-op campaign (it can be played alone, of course), physics-driven gameplay, deeply customizable party members with job and kit systems, tactical switching and control of said members, intelligent AI, and day-to-day choices that matter in the overall storyline. The development team behind the game is made up of industry veterans, and it even has a couple of veteran voice actors (though fully voiced characters is a stretch goal). Proof-of-concept gameplay video inside the link.

It follows a group of teenage students recruited to the Morningstar Academus, a military school in which they undergo training in healing, fighting, and magic. And fortunately, they're young enough to see the monsters that have been stalking the people of the Kingdom of Avallia, something adults can't do. They must uncover the mysterious purpose behind the school while simultaneously dealing with these dangerous creatures, as well as the consequences of growing up and becoming stronger.

Air Brawl: Someone on Reddit recently posted this. Some sort of multiplayer dieselpunk air combat game, looks like a fair amount of work has gone into it already. The kickstarter fund is expressed in swedish kronor, to the tune of 49000USD equivalent.

I was into it up until the kid decided to start playing it and then had his head melt/explode and his mother come up and tearfully/delusionally start trying console the headless corpse of her son that he was going to be alright, trying to come to grips with her loss. That really doesn't belong in a trailer of a game that's trying to glorify violence, surely? Kind of undermines the whole thing.

Game looks pretty fun, although randomized level design is a bit iffy; you can get playable products out of it, even fun ones, but nothing put forth thus far compares to a set of well-made hand-crafted stages - even the better auto-generated ones pale in comparison.

Well, to be fair, it does seem to be a parody of some sorts ._. Not sure what was the reason for disturbing turn but yeah

But yeah, apparently the method they use is that they have several handcrafted rooms and randomization connects them randomly <_< Or something

Reminds me of original xcom I suppose

Neptune, Have Mercy, a submarine roguelike where you explore an alien sea. Gameplay looks fun and the art style and music are neat.

So on old kickstarter news, looks like Whoever made the mistakes of trusting a Kickstarter by Peter Molyneux got exactly what anyone who knows anything about Molyneux expected: Bupkis. Or at best something where the devs “simply can’t see us delivering all the features promised on the kickstarter page.”

Crowfall is a fantasy game that combines an MMO with a large-scale strategy game— lovingly referred to as a Throne War Simulator by the devs. The game involves player-created characters called Crows battling within different Worlds in a War of the Gods. The Worlds are procedurally generated, as well as voxel-based (the game uses the Voxel Farm engine that is also used in the upcoming EverQuest Next, but don't worry about it being blocky like Minecraft; the voxels are so small, you can't see them) to allow for heavily destructible environments. Each World plays by its own set of rules, such as which races can participate, how death and respawning are handled, the duration of the campaign, etc.

Up to three characters can be created from 12 base archetypes, with their own player-selected advantages and disadvantages in addition to being greatly customizable in stats, gear, appearance, and abilities. They are also able to collect up to three Disciplines (sub-classes) as they grow, further deciding how they play.

The characters will last forever, but the Worlds they fight in won't; an evil undead force known as the Hunger gradually takes hold of them as the seasons pass, corrupting the deadly creatures within and eventually destroying the World itself in the winter. When either the World's time expires or a win condition is met, the Crows return to the everlasting player-owned and player-managed Eternal Kingdoms, either to relish their victory or lick their wounds in defeat. The closer the Worlds are to the Hunger's center, the greater the risk... and the reward.

Hey. Remember the Descent games?

Well, the series is making a comeback with Descent: Underground, a prequel to the original game!
