The realm of Dituenti was renowned for its magic. In particular, the Arcane Tower of Wizardry was renowned as a library of lore, storehouse of wondrous items and home of several powerful casters. Young mages from all over the world came to study there, learning from the books and masters there.
One especially famous magic user was Nine-Tailed Cat, the mightiest sorcerer in the land. He had always been a master of magic without even having to study; it was simply instinctual to him. Unfortunately, with his power came pride and recklessness. As a display of his power, he decided to summon three mighty demons of the Abyss to the Arcane Tower and bind them to his will. For some reason, he thought nothing could go wrong.
Unfortunately, something did. The demons were too powerful for him to control and broke free, and their first act was to turn on their summoner. As his would-be servants tore into him, Nine-Tailed Cat's last words were, "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time".
Now completely out of control, these demons decided to take this opportunity to spread some evil. First, they sealed the Arcane Tower off, preventing the inhabitants from leaving or sending for help. Then they disguised themselves as normal mages, hoping the inhabitants wouldn't know the difference, and prepared to slaughter them all.
However, the people of the Arcane Tower weren't completely defenceless. They were wizards, and capable ones too. Being subtle and quick to anger, they decided it was best to use their formidable magical powers to send these infiltrators right back to the foul pits they came from. Sure, a few innocents could get toasted by spells being slung about willy-nilly, but getting rid of a threat like this was worth the risk. Thus, they gathered around and began a series of not-necessarily-careful investigations to find the demons...
