At the time, they were. (CCP has a mechanism to report this sort of stuff so they can get in touch with local authorities for a wellfare check.) After it was clear they were nothing but lies, they were not.
This is made with the benefit of months of hindsight.

Nous restons ici.Fuck ice mining. I was supposed to run guard duty during an ice mining op once. I watched The Godfather. All of it.
I managed to get VLC to play over my EVE client and keep my local and overview visible. Easiest operation ever.
And yeah, using threats of suicide to get people to stop ganking you is probably the saddest thing I have ever heard.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? If someone is suicidal and you're not equipped to handle it, which is the appropriate course of action:
- Urge him to seek help, and/or call the Suicide Hotline
- Mock him and tell other people to make him feel worse
Even if the guy is fake, it's #1.
And if it's someone trying to get sympathy because he's getting ganked? You give the same advice for someone who really is suicidal: stop playing, seek help.
Oh, and by the way, suppose the guy really was fake but doing an investigation? Or was someone from the company checking QA on their support staff?
It's called getting busted.

Jonah FalconOuch, I'd question my mental stability if I just sat there shooing blue lasers at white chunks all day.
I've seen the "gonna kill myself" after some poor soul looses his spiffy new ship, but I don't think its ever gone past the point where he uses the moment to warp off after some insults are exchanged through local chat[not my group]. Either way I'd expect game staff to act like a little more professional than your common newbie ganker.

To be honest, the uproar over this particular incident is all kind of stupid. EVE is a cold, uncaring universe populated by psychopaths because it is meant to be. No gods, no masters, no controls, meet the true face of humanity in all its glorious ugliness.
People join EVE and quit again because it scares them. Everyone who plays the game must eventually confront the fact that this is really what their fellow humans are like when they are unbound, and most recoil from it because they truly do not want to know that. We have created a universe of madmen and sinners because we desired one, it's far too late to complain that it's populated by madmen and sinners now.
Nobody who plays the game is actually seeing something new going on here. Indeed, this is actually much tamer than the sort of local smack you'll see in Jita because it's done with benefit of hindsight and knowledge of falsity. (At the time he was reported to CCP and referred to the suicide hotline, I remember the threads on Kugu talking about the interdiction. Don't make me repeat this a third time.) The only thing that will happen in the long run is the addition of threats of suicide to the arsenal of metagaming trolls that already exists.
Nobody got busted. CCP is kneejerking a useless response to appease the media.

Nous restons ici.^ Look I can understand the shithole that is EVE (really, people who join up should know better), but what happens if it's a real real case then?

Give me cute or give me...something?I'm sorry, but even if they knew it was fake, no one who works for the company should ever suggest a player kill themselves.
As someone who used to be suicidal, if someone threatens to kill themselves over something as absurd as internet spaceships I say that they're a coward unless they do it. Depression is a serious medical condition and anyone who exploits it for gain is the lowest of the low.
"Roll for whores."OR they are using it as a way to call for help or flirt with the idea because they are not prepared to take their own lives yet. There's no way to know.
Mocking them is unacceptable regardless of it.
Instead, I have learned a horrible truth of existence...some stories have no meaning.Shameful. We had our share of suicidal members here and even though some of it was just a prank we all took it seriously... But this? *Facedesk* Humanity leaves me in despair...

I disagree wholeheartly. I can see EVE's appeal, but there are limits. Humanity is already bad as it is (with the facades and all), and you mean to let that "ugliness" as you call it run rampant and embrace it in a virtual world because of the whole "it's not real" feeling you get from it? Sigh.
Mocking someone who speaks of suicide is unacceptable.

Instead, I have learned a horrible truth of existence...some stories have no meaning.Mocking someone who uses suicide as a metagame tactic is not.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Just to let you know that the guy who started that whole suicide remark has made a heartfelt apology on the EVE Online forums.
I read his series over at ten ton hammer, I'm surprised he was the one who started this. He always seemed practically evil, not super villain.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? He did say his EVE character is just that: a character. The man himself is completely different. Unfortunately, he was drunk and all that, but what's done is done.
Well, good on him for apologizing. All's well that ends well, huh?
It also ought to be clarified that the guy isn't an employee, something not clearly stated in this thread. The CSM are volunteers, the player-elected representative council. (The Goons being a majority segment of the active player base, make up a significant voting bloc and so there's always been at least one goon member.)
I'm at a distance from Eve right now, but being familiar with The Mittani's prior shenanigans, I'd hold him in enough "cool, smart person" cred to take his apology at face value. But it's not the first time one or more Goons have crossed the line into RL attacks.* I'm just not sure there's any way to strengthen that barrier without cutting into the things that make Eve unique and interesting through.
Sometimes I wonder what rational reason I could have for playing EVE.
Pretty graphis, and I like mining stuff. I'm more into the PvE aspect, anyway...
Yeah, I really don't fit in there.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.EVE? Not surprised. Did they know his address and loot his home afterwards?
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984I never did get why people play EVE Online. After all, BDSM clubs do exist to indulge in masochistic tendencies.
Meh, I would disagree. I enjoy the ugliness of Eve. I go out and wreck or extort miners in low-sec, and it feels good to know that a GM won't come running and tell me to stop ganking people because it hurts the carebear miners feelings.
I wouldn't tell someone to off themselves, but I don't have any sympathy for someone who is willing to talk about self-harm over a video game.
^ Oh, you're on EVE? Small world, man.
I learned not to mine in lo-sec within a week, the hard way. Oh well, only noob-stuff was lost and it was a good learning experience.

Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.Is anyone else reminded of the thread about how someone said that sexism is integral to the fighting game experience? (This seems to be the same sort of "Our game has a CULTURE, and you must not defy the CULTURE" vibe.)
That's Feo . . . He's a disgusting, mysoginistic, paedophilic asshat who moonlights as a shitty writer—Something AwfulYes, although douchebaggery in EVE is, you can say, much more integrated...it has to do a lot that there's no rules and laws against those...the fighting community case you have real-life reputation at stake...in EVE, you're still anonymous...GIFT applies...

Give me cute or give me...something?
So goons are assholes and the guy is also asshole, why am I not surprised...
But here's the thing: some goons the forums argue that even if this a real suicide potential case, then we should just let them be...why help a stranger? ..yeah, like suicide hotline should NOT be there...
Oh well, GIFT at work, as always...
