New chapter out.

Earthquake stuff and more earthquake stuff and - Oh, my God.

If the Japanese actually wanted an excuse to resume the war they found a perfectly good one right there.

Which they do, but only later on. Apparently the JSDF stops short of outright war, and instead does a "police action" to rescue its "citizens trapped in hostile territory". Its why the Alnus forces attack the capital in book 4.

Judging by the book covers though, the Dragon comes first.

[up]So basically the Korean War. (USA/UN: "War? What war? There was never any war. There was a police action, but no war.")

[up]Korea? Man, that would have an awkward resonance to it.

Aohige had a better word for it: spankings. Every time the Empire goes out of line in the later books, the JSDF would "spank" it as punishment, but didn't go beyond that, and once is finished, goes back to Alnus to live in peace.

Thing is, some people enjoy getting spanked, so...

That reminds me of what the Chinese when they went to war with Vietnam in the 70's.

So I started writing something along the lines of "what if the Gate opened in the USSR during WWII". It's supposed to be from the Po V of Princess Pina some 15 years after the fact looking back on and trying to explain to her countrymen through a/few historical book(s)why, how, and in what process the Empire lost, a bit like what Polybius did about the Romans. :|

New chapter!

Well hey, repercussions! I loved the silent look Itami shared with diplomat, before both of them start panicking at just how much of a massive diplomatic screw up they've created.

And uh oh, show of force, before the "spanking" I mentioned several posts above.

Well, the untranslated chapter is up as usual on Alphapolis, so just waiting for someone at AK to translate.

What do we have this time?

A mess, a truly glorious mess. Tuuka's PTSD explodes into full-blown psychosis due to our dark elf pushing things along. It's bad enough that Itami has to personally intervene, but even he passes out the first time as it reminds him of what happened to his mother. Of course as all of this is happening Yao directly makes her request to Itami...

Well, looks like we're going to get our JSDF vs. Dragon action after all. Kind of funny how Itami visualized trying to fight it — complete with RP Gs — like fighting a gunship.

Yeah, so all the hubbub about the Gate website ACTUALLY being for a Gate anime adaptation was true. Have to wonder which version they'll go with though — the webnovels have extreme right wing stuff in it, so thats out, which leaves the manga and the light novel rewrites.

PV:

And Key visual.

Itami and Tuuka are spot on, but Rory's been ridiculously streamlined, while Leilei looks like she's TEN.

More key visuals:

Rory. Tuka. Leilei. Itami.

It's interesting that there was much focus on the freaking Leopard 1 in the PV, since Itami's squad didn't have onethe novel or the manga. Also, while the JSDF did have tanks, I think they were Types instead.

As for the director, it's going to be the director of the Love Live anime.

Out of curiosity, have the novels been translated?

Just reached chapter 46 in the manga. I wonder where that is compared to the LN. I also don't know where to read the LN to begin with (if it were translated quite far already lol). Can hardly wait for the anime now LOL

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.

The first five books are done, but there are five gaiden stories dealing with what the Alnus community and the JSDF left behind do after the Alnus gate is closed, as well as a sequel set of books that cover what happens when Leilei successfully reopens another gate.

Why can't this come sooner LOL. Lelei will definitely not sound like Karen, while Tuka will be Maria. Rory would weirdly sound like Xenovia...

So far there doesn't seem to be much actual discussion of the plot. Let me fix that a bit. SO... does anyone else think that Tyuule's and Diabo's plans as shown so far in the manga have kinda glaringly huge flaws?

In Diabo's case, he wants to try to ally with some other nation on Earth in order to fight against the Japanese. While I'm sure plenty of scum-sucking weapons dealers and black market-type folks would more than willingly supply them with weapons in exchange for gold, that kinda depends on the ability to get to our world in the first place. The only gate (that we know of) is heavily guarded by the JSDF on both sides, and as far as we know they can't open another one, since it's implied that Hardy was responsible for the first gate. So I don't see how he's supposed to get anyone through to negotiate that kind of agreement (spoilers from earlier on in the thread about the Empire invading Japan again notwithstanding).

As for Tyuule's plan of sparking a long, bloody war that would destroy everything: that kind of destructive conflict only happens when both sides are near parity, or at least one side is at least within shouting distance of the other in terms of military power. The JSDF have such a massive technological advantage, as well as a modern appreciation of trying to prevent collateral damage, that any war that may get started would be short, clean, and efficient. Though I suppose either way in the end that would result in the Empire's defeat and I guess she'd be happy with that.

Also I'm pretty much okay with the character designs for the anime. I'm disappointed that they simplifed (aka just removed entire portions of) Rory's outfit, but it's tolerable enough. I just hope they do justice to those glorious scenes of FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY.

New PV.

Looks like they're going with not only streamlined designs, but with the "Austro-Hungarians" design from the Light Novel rewrite rather than "Roman Empire" of the manga. Welp. :(

Hmmmm not really "Austro-Hungarian" though? Because the Austro-Hungarian Empire is 19th Century (and definitely doesn't use armor anymore). I think you're thinking of Holy Roman Empire (with the Habsburgs of the Austrian Empire as the Emperor of the HRE).

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.
