Well I've just read about half of the first Moore tbp. It's certainly got good qualities, but it's also a very dry read so far.

Really? I just ordered that off Amazon, actually. I've heard literally nothing but good things about it so that makes me a little sad. Hopefully I'll like it, but I'm getting two volumes of Sandman and The Dark Knight Returns the same shipment so I can't complain, really.

I'd still say I like it. It's very intelligent and has some interesting observations. And since I haven't got very far into it I don't know what direction it's going to take. So far there's little in the way of character interaction, which I think is part of the reason I'm not enjoying it as much as I might otherwise.

So the two of you are just starting out with Swamp Thing? Alan Moore's run doesn't really hit it's stride until the 2nd volume, Love And Death, in my opinion.

Pro-tip: don't watch either of the movies, they're terrible.

Kinda wish they'd kept everything post-Alan Moore in the 52 reboot, because it went to some really interesting places even after he left, but it'd be kinda hard to explain what with the DCU's history being condensed to around 5 years (given the fact that the characters in Swamp Thing aged in real time).

^ Discount Swamp Thing crossovers with the rest of the DCU and then push the series back a bit into the 70s/80s so it can move in real time?

[up]A little hard to do since a few of big arcs in the series involve him interacting with other characters like Batman and Abin-Sur (most likely not how his name is spelled), just to name 2. Then there's the fact that Abby and Constantine were in there 50s or 60s until the reboot (Abby looks to be in her 20s now) and Abby's and Swamp Thing's baby...

Actually, even Moore's run doesn't work very well with the 52 reboot, since Alec has met and knows both the original Swamp Thing and Abby. Then there's the bit where Swamp Thing and Constantine were briefly there for one of the Crisis (don't know which one, but I'm pretty sure they're all supposed to be out of continuity now). And it doesn't make much sense how Abby went from how she was in the older series to how she is in Snyder's series. And there's been absolutely no mention of Constantine as far as I can recall.

So yeah...as best as I can tell, the best way for the reboot to mesh with the old stuff is if you pretend the old stuff stops right before Constantine shows up.

It's still a pretty good series and the only one of two that kept my interest past the first 2 issues.

[up] No mention of Constantine yet, but in the latest issue of Animal Man, he shows up in Buddy's dream...hallucination...vision thing of the future. Or A future. And the two series cross over soon, so it's safe to assume that he exists in Swamp Thing.

Read Issue 7 now. Still solid as ever, incredible to think we made it 7 issues before the titular character even made his appearance.

[up]That's Anton Arcane, Abby's uncle. He was a main antagonists in the pre-Alan Moore stuff, but he continued to appear every 3-5 years after that.

He wanted to switch bodies with Swamp Thing to gain his powers, but Swamp Thing didn't go along with it when he realized Anton was evil. They fought and Anton's castle caved in on him, his minions (The Un-men), tried to "rebuild" him and made him into a monster and he was pretty much Swamp Things arch-enemy from that point onwards.

He also did horrible experiments on Abby's father (his brother), turning him into the Patchwork Man.

I want a movie adaptation. Guillermo Del Toro would be perfect, I think.
