I'm working on yet another of my 'side stories' (other verse stories geaturing my usual group of OCs).(Credit for the plot idea goes to my wonderful beta reader Anthenia.
Basic Premise: The fictional country of Escalus, populated by a race of Psionic people, there is an ongoing issue with another kingdom (Banquo) who seem to harbor dissent toward Psi. The King and Queen of Escalus tried to make peace with the other group (the Queen was the younger daughter of Banqo's royal family. They tried to make peace through marrying. However some of the nobles of Banquo seek more hatred, and the court advisor/ sorcerer of Escalus Dai returns that hatred.
Dai fears that the King and Queen are being too soft hearted and will let Banquo overrun their kingdom, leading to slavery and burning. Dai finds out about the prospective assasination of the King and Queen and decides to keep the information to himself, allowing it to happen. The King and Queen are assasinated and one of their small sons are gone (clothes and blood found but no baby) and assumed dead. They have the other son ( the missing boy's twin) left behind.
Dai raises up the young Prince and acts as his royal Advisor. He keeps the kid as sheltered and naive as possible (rarely letting him know much about the world beyond the walls of the palace), pushing his agenda forward through the boy. The boy's brother is raised as a commoner, who lives with a bunch of other kids who are either theives , war orphans or children otherwise hurt by the war.
The two somehow encounter each other and the commoner tries to convince the prince that the war is not a good idea. He helps the boy escape for a day to show him what his political actions are doing to the kingdom. Dai catches them returning and shows the prince what the other side is doing to them to get him to go along with the war.
This leads to the poor kid eventually having a breakdown and Dai takes the chance to take his attack up a level with a bold assualt. Commoner kid and his friends help the prince out and they go to head off Dai.
There's also a subplot with Dai and his familair, a shapeshifter who sticks to the form of a cat. His human form has been messed up somehow making his human form not properly formed. Basically they have a sort fo codependent relationship because Dai has told the shapeshifter that others will hurt him or shun him. The shapeshifter goes along with Dai's plans because he's afraid of what might be done to him if the people of Banquo have their way.
The story is intended to have a sort of Disney Movie-esque flavor to it. It's mood and tone would likely be similar to that of the Hunchback Of Notre Dame at most. As far as setting goes I'm debating either modernish, or 19th cenntury Clock Punk. I don't have any idea what to name this thing other than "Escalus" after the kingdom.
Any suggestions?
