As some of you know, I'm in the final tweaking phases of writing the story to Turtles all the Way: A Shell Game, which is a game. I showed my current draft to the person doing music, since the music tracks are all directly interconnected with the story scenes. One of his only problems was this:

Scene 1 (Timeless Garden)

Tikk is drinking some tea in the garden, lazing his time away, and then notices someone who is presumably the player.

Tikk: "Oh, hello there. It’s been a while since I’ve had visitors. Welcome! Come on in, have some tea!"

Camera moves as if the player is sitting down on a chair at the opposite end of the table.

Tikk: "You’ve come all the way out here, but I’m afraid there’s not much to do around here... Oh, I know! Why don’t I tell you the story of an interesting conflict I once witnessed?"

Player is given the choice of "Yes" or "No".

Version A (Timeless Garden; if "Yes" is selected)

[omitted due to irrelevancy]

Version B (Timeless Garden; if "No" is selected)

Tikk: "Oh, well I suppose that’s too bad, then."

"GAME OVER" appears on the screen. Game ends.

I should note that all Non-Standard Game Overs are followed by the credits rolling on a black screen to a song about how much You Suck.

He's basically telling me that giving a game over that quickly is "too drastic". After I said it was a joke, he said it was "in bad taste" and that I should redo that part so it continues on to the story like the "Yes" option does.

I've been asking around to see if people generally agree or disagree with him on that. Do you agree or disagree with the musician on this subject? I don't know what to think.

I'd post this in the Video Games forum, but it'd get lost right away, and this is more of a writing question than a game question anyway.

Leave it. It's a decent joke. Probably not something to do more than once, but it works as a joke for the beginning.

I'd say leave it in. Funny game overs are kind of a tradition of classic adventure games, are they not?

I'd say, at the very least, make sure the credits are skippable. And probably make sure, at least for this particular credits sequence, it says "Press ____ to skip." I mean, sure, it's funny, but to a gamer, it'll get annoying really quick if it means they have to sit through a long credits sequence for a harmless "No."

I'd include maybe a prelim?

Yes -> [omit]

No-> [She asks are you sure]

No -> [omit]

Yes -> [Game over]

Only something less complicatedly worried.

Keep it. It'll be a nice surprise.

Keep it; anyone who selects "No" is obviously being a little contrary, poking around to see what will happen if they pick the "wrong" options, so they ought to be ready for something like an unexpected game over. It's not like they're losing saved progress or anything.

I agree with this - it's nice as a harmless joke, but if it's too inconvenient the joke stops being strictly harmless.

On that note, make sure that it's not too easy to press "No" by mistake.

All valid points. Especially the part about not making it very easy to hit no by mistake.
