Secular friend here. Thanks for the reminder that Lent is indeed a thing that happens. My daughter is a Girl Scout, and I'll be bringing snacks to a meeting sometime during Lent (and not on a Friday, either). I'm not sure how many of the other scouts observe Lent, so I should probably bring something healthy and vegetarian, right?
Observant tropers, how would you explain Lent to a fourth grader? I'd like my daughter to know that Lent happens, and that if she has any observant friends, she should not suggest that they consume what they've given up.
All right, this year's Lent has returned! Well, it has been ongoing for a while, but still!
I totally forgot this was a thing until last weekend and it took me a while to plan out what I will give up, but now I finally decided upon it.
Things I will be giving up:
- Excessive use of internet and electronic device in general, including browsing TV Tropes.
- Unhealthy diet, specifically, carbonated drinks, sweets, and overly fatty foods.
- Cursing
Since I started this a week late, I will conclude it a week later as well.
I've tried to observe Lent 3 times, but I've been successful only once. Here's hoping this time works out better.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I wish I could give up playing organ at two churches when I'm an atheist and hate going to church, but I am shackled to this job because there is literally no one who can replace me at it, nor can I find anything else that gives me an extra $100 a week.
I'm giving up video games during this period. I'm mostly going to fast everyday until 6 but its mostly the former.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u8p-tnJWGoEven though I'm no longer a Catholic, I seem to have a craving for Mc Donalds' "Fillet O'Fish" even though I often have fish in my daily meal.
ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔|I DO COMMISSIONS|ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔All right, everybody, tomorrow this year's Lent begins and lasts until April 18! Finally, first time in years I might actually start it on time!
- Things I will be giving up:
- Frivolous use of Internet, including but not limited to TV Tropes and Wikipedia search that isn't related to my academic or legal issues.
- Overwatch (Yes, I really love that game)
- Profanities
- Greasy food
- Sleeping for more than eight hours
- Carbonated drinks and snacks.
- Things I will pursue more:
- Saying nice things and expressing gratitude
- Read up on my country's laws, particularly constitutions.
- Finish my novel and submit it to publisher.
I actually have a very good feeling about this year. Yes, I might jinxing myself, but hey I've been way worse regarding Lent anyways. XD
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. No junk food for the entire Lent...again.
I would say no book buying but I'm already doing that for the last 2 months.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u8p-tnJWGoOh wait...
No book buying because I have a fuck ton of books.
I can eat junk food...but I'll be fasting. No eating until 6 every day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u8p-tnJWGoMy parish has, or is associated with, several really good outreach programs for the poor, so I’m getting involved with that.
Move confidently in the direction of your dreams. So, the Lent 2019 is over, at least in my timezone as of this posting. I failed to observe it 100%, but I find satisfaction in that I managed to cut down on my excesses significantly, by at least 60% or so.
Giving up TV Tropes has been consistently among the hardest thing to give up, but this year it was rather easy. Profanities were the hardest to give up, and I ended up using F-word only one week in when I bumped my knee on a desk.
Aiming for 100% next year's Lent. Next time, though, I should try giving up fewer things.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. The fasting thing was easy for me.
The no book buying this was easy since I've been doing it since last year.
So, Lent ends Friday or was the last Lent day on Wednesday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u8p-tnJWGoIt's that time of the year! Well, a day late, but better late than never!
So I noticed that I've been having a bad track record with Lent, so I'm going to keep things simpler and limit my prohibitions. Instead, I will focus more on doing good things.
- Don't drink carbonated drinks and drink more water.
- Read more books.
- Sleep more regularly.
- Exercise more.
That's...about it for me this year. Honestly, it's actually not too different from my new year's resolution, really. XP
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Yeah. I found out Lent started yesterday. Damn.
So, starting today, no eating or drinking until 6pm. That's pretty much it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u8p-tnJWGoUh, *trying to fit in*, did anyone do Pancake day before this?
If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. Toni MorrisonI saw it in an old English book. It said that since Christians weren’t allowed to eat eggs, milk and flour in Lent, they ate pancakes the day before.
If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. Toni Morrison...damn it how come nobody told me?
Oh well, everyday is a good day to eat pancake anyway!
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. My aim for Lent is to see how much of my fanfic project I can work on during the period, so that I can say I've done a consistently good job with it as of late, and I can rest easier and balance it more evenly with the other aspects of my life.
In other words, that also means I'm gonna try and procrastinate less on my passions and my work.

Oh lordy, I totally forgot that there was actually a thread for this, and that I used to post here almost every year.
All right, this year's Lent is going to be a bit different...in that I became an atheist last year. So technically I have no reason to do this, and yet, I kinda like the practice's spirit and I'm gonna do it anyway.
Anyhow, for this year I'm gonna do it in two broad topic:
First, no frivolous spending, be it both snacks, books, and entertainment. I already have dozens of unread books. I certainly won't be able to read all of them in 40 days anyway.
Second, no unnecessary use of Internet. No Reddit, no TV Tropes, etc. only using essential websites such as Wikipedia, Google/Gmail, Youtube (I need it to do researches from time to time...), and so on.
Let's see how successful I can be this time around.

Crossposting from the Christian thread:
I once again forgot about the existence of Lent until it started. How typical of me. At least this time it's been less than a week.
Things I shall be giving up:
Should be reasonable enough. Right? tongue
