I'd certainly like to hear what happens with that.
My off-hand guess based on past incidents is that someone, somewhere will continue doing scanlations of the affected titles and those who want those scanlations will find them. Then the corporate people will go after that group/site, and the cycle rinses and repeats.
Meanwhile, the people who were doing those series will move on to some other, less litigious manga companies to scanlate. No biggie.
Still sucks especially since scanlators do a much better job than the complanies. Why don't they take the hint and exploit this oppurtunity to make more money? The current model is not good enough for this day and age.
"Thanos is a happy guy! Just look at the smile in his face!"I LOL'd.
Seriously, if companies want people to pay for stuff they should really step up the quality and immediacy of translations. It's ridiculous that people who do this stuff for NO PAY are faster and often better than "professionals" who are ostensibly PAID to do it. Ugh.
Well, taking into account that it takes time to get licenses and organize stuff. But still. Arrrrgh.

The scanlators of Rosario + Vampire season II have pre-emptively dropped the series in response to these events.
Yeah, just when I thought this cannot get any wor- okay, not going to complete that sentence
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/I don't get why the delay is such a big deal. Right now Shonen Jump Alpha is only two weeks behind the paper magazine release. So if you stop reading scanlations and use the official online source, all you'll have to do is wait two weeks and then you'll be getting a new chapter each week again.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure they could get digital copies of the manga out within a day of the magazine's release, but they probably want to wait 'til the magazine's off the shelves first, just like you won't find movies on Netflix until after their theatrical run is finished.

"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoTwo weeks delay is a pretty big deal for a lot of people, especially with speedier resources available. I wouldn't mind the delay, personally, but that SJ Alpha thing doesn't cater to my country, apparently, so yeah.
It doesn't cater to my country, either. We really don't have a lot of options beyond scans, since we don't have manga distributors of the physical kind either, and ordering them from the USA takes us like thrice the price and four times the time it takes you guys to get the stuff.
Always remember that before complaining about why people reads scans.
Yep, I consider "this is not legally available in my country and will not be for the foreseeable future" the #1 acceptable reason for reading scanlations.
If you can't get it in your country, that's a whole 'nother matter. It's the people who say "But I have to wait two weeks!" that bug me. It's not like they'll have to wait that long between each chapter; they'll have to wait that long once before they're back to their regular schedule.
"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoHey, I would be down with getting Shonen Jump Alpha, if it was actually AVAILABLE TO MY COUNTRY. Fucking Region Codes....
A corpse should be left well enough alone...@ formerly G.G
yeah,no dude, stephen (i beleive, hope i spelled it right), the guy whos doing the translations for sjalpha is much better than any scanalator out there for one piece, and an actual fan of the work. period.
as for this whole situation, it doesn't really do anything, there will always be other places to search for it. it will just take a bit of searching. not like anything like this has stopped anyone before right?
@Emperordaein
yeah i know it sucks, but viz doesn't handle that, shueisha does.
on another note, about the 2 week delay for sjalpha, its really not that big of a deal, plus they said if this works out they can close the gap further. but as we know, most are never willing to compromise, since these day's most, have this entitlement issue that gets in the way of their rational thinking.
its still has a ways to go, but sjalpha is moving in the right direction, not to say that it doesnt need improvements

ONE PIECE SEASON 4 IS HERE!! Support the straw hats and funimation: http://tinyurl.com/cffxygr@Raven Wilder: I actually have a subscription to SJ Alpha, but I will say this.
As long as scanlations are that far ahead, people reading through Alpha have no place to discuss without spoilers if they actually use Alpha, since everyone else will be way ahead of them. The same problem appears when you only read through the official release for something that has been scanlated.
Shueisha and Shgakukan co-own VIZ. There is literally no reason why they cannot do it simultaneously and worldwide.
Except, again, that they want people to buy the actual magazine while it's on the shelves. I mean, when a new movie comes out in theatres, do you complain that you have to wait a while before you can download it from Net Flix?
"It takes an idiot to do cool things, that's why it's cool" - Haruhara HarukoThe difference here is languages. A reduced English online magazine is not the same as a much larger Japanese magazine, especially since the Japanese public will most likely opt for the print version anyway due to it being Japanese.
If not, they can block out Japan and allow everyone else. Remember, they do simultaneous translations with China for the entire magazine.
Your Netflix example is flawed, since the content is still available to us in the same form.

This isn't a reverse importation issue like some bluray releases. No one in Japan is going to go to SJA for their manga. And yes I do complain about Netflix, especially when I'm forced to wait an additional 52 days AFTER the DVD release to see something on streaming.
edited 15th Feb '12 2:15:58 PM by EvilOtaku
To clarify: no Japanese will go to SJA because not only it have much less content but also is in a foreign language which most of them can not read. Unlike the bluray releases, which all have at last an option to keep the Japanese dub.
I Am Not A Lawyer, but I am pretty sure that international trade law and licensing agreements are not "literally no reason." They may be bullshit reasons, but not no reason.
As we've seen with anime, rights for online and physical distribution are not packaged together by Japanese companies every time. Unless they gave those out too (doubtful), they can still do it.
And, even if you were to pull that out, Viz is the distributor in the UK. Why does the UK not get Shonen Jump Alpha?
edited 15th Feb '12 3:58:28 PM by burnpsy
Now that is a very good question, which should be directed to the Viz offices in the UK. (Politely, so as to maximize the chance of actually getting an answer.)
I read it online cause I dont have to pay. If the series is good enough, I buy their stuff.

If fans have money they ought to buy available manga volumes of their favorite titles. If manga companies wants money, they should stop being lazy and do best to provide manga everywhere.

Check the second latest one (at the time of this posting). Now THAT will be interesting.
