It's a trope, albeit a very large Super-Trope that doubles as an index.
I find that strange when this note is at the top of the page.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIt got changed down the line, but somehow no one cut the examples. Or someone restored them.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. So, should we delete them? I see no reason for this to be the only index with examples. Isn't that against our policy, anyway?

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerReading the edit story, it was put 26th Oct by Paul A with the following edit reason: "experience has taught me that the note halfway down the page is not prominent enough and easily missed"
The note? Regardless of where it is, doesn't it mean there should be no examples anyway?
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI guess it is speaking about the following note: "NOTE: while this page has/should have* the Flame Bait banner, specific forms of this do not. This is now an index not a trope. Please check the particular trope you want to use instead to see if it goes on Main or YMMV."
Both of the notes about the index thing look like they were added very recently.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSo, is this an index? If it is, then it shouldn't have examples, right? They should go to subtropes.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerNo, it is a supertrope + index that someone randomly stuck index warnings on but never turned into an exampleless supertrope.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickHmmm. Searching through the TRS morgue, it looks like whoever did it didn't even bother making a thread to decide that.
I guess the question now is whether this should be only an index? Do we have other supertrope + index cases, and do they list examples?

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerWell, The original note was: "NOTE: while this page has the Flame Bait banner, specific forms of this do not, and may be potholed in YMMV or the main wiki, depending on whether they are subjective or not.", put 29th Apr. The second note was put in 2 May: "NOTE: while this page has/should have* the Flame Bait banner, specific forms of this do not, and may be potholed in YMMV or the main wiki, depending on whether they are subjective or not." The last bit was put in 20 Sep.

We have lots of supertrope+index combos. Almost all of them list examples. Colour-Coded for Your Convenience is one.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickAh, thanks for clarifying.
May I suggest we do the same as in Color-Coded for Your Convenience and allow only examples which do not fit in any of the subtropes? I personally believe this shouldn't have examples, since the subtopes seem to cover everything adequately, but that might just be me.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerYes, that is generally the policy with supertropes. Examples only go on the supertrope if they don't fit better in the subtrope.

Apologies if this has been addressed before, but why does Character Derailment have examples? It is an index, not a trope. The page even says examples should go under the subtropes, which seem to adequately cover all forms of it.
