When they first picked up Prince Fielding everyone was "Will he turn the team around?" and then, when he didnt, everyone (including me) was "Well, what do you expect? That's just the Tigers" and now, well, I am experiencing this uncomfortable, unfamiliar feeling inside, something I've never felt before, I think its.... pride.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."The Braves are out, so I'm basically dead inside. However, I can say that the sadness of Yankees fans is both nutritious and filling. And that a Giants-Tigers series would be uncommonly fun to watch.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2012_10_22_slnmlb_sfnmlb_1 looks like the Cards finally ran out of squirrels.
And it's the Tigers vs. the Giants here at home. This is going to be very interesting!
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."I have a feeling that the Giants are gonna get slaughtered by the Tigers. (anything can happen, but I'm not counting on that)

The Tigers have the stronger starting pitching, but a weaker defense and bullpen than the Giants. Both teams are about the same offensively, although they score runs very differently (Giants play small ball, while Tigers hit for power).
Ultimately, the Giants' preference for said small ball, along with the Tigers weaknesses, means that the series outcome is all about the Tigers starting pitching. Lots of strikeouts and 6+ innings from the Tigers starters are pretty much a requirement. If the Tigers can't get that, they likely will lose.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Verlander is not afraid to pitch a whole game if needed.
But not four games in a row. We can win two games, easy. More than that?
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."I think it's safe to say that after four innings and five runs given up, we have a much better assessment of exactly how effective Verlander is going to be.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)He can bounce back, and I fully expect to win some, but he's only one man, and I dont know if any of the other pitchers are up to this. Nailbiting!
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."Well, two games for the Giants, and now the Tigers are in real trouble.
Looks like the Giants specifically tried to run the pitch counts up on Fister to get to the Tigers bullpen. (114 pitches in just over six innings - yikes!) With Bumgarner pitching like a champ, that worked out perfectly. It'll be interesting if they try that strategy again when this series hits Detroit.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)The real problem is a distinct lack of enthusiam on the Detroit side. Our team looks like they can't believe that they're there.
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."Tigers are down 3 games to NOTHING. THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED FROM SUCH AN APPARENTLY DOMINATING TEAM.

My technical, wonky, detailed analysis of how the Tigers can turn this around— Hit... a... ball!!
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."It's looking grim for Detroit, but I seriously doubt the Giants will sweep: the Tigers are overdue to start playing like themselves again. (Not that I'd mind a sweep—I'm an unreconstructed National Leaguer, and love S.F. like a second home.)
"She was the kind of dame they write similes about." —Pterodactyl JonesDetroit just can't hit. -_-
Well, the Giants did have an advantage here. Remember the Athletics are built on the same team plan as the Giants (small ball offense, great pitching and defense). They just didn't have edge of experience to make that count against the Tigers. But the Giants do have experience...and coupled with the inability to the Tigers to get key hits, this series is just about wrapped up.
On a unrelated note, Japan has talent drain issues. Personally, I don't think Japanese baseball is going to win this one.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Congratulations to the SF Giants.
[Sigh...]
"We learn from history that we do not learn from history."Braves are considering bringing back the "Screaming Indian" logo. Maybe. Possibly.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Good for them, as long as the relevant tribes don't mind. I don't like it when random people get all high and mighty and say something is racist. 9/10 the tribes seem to not mind or even support sport teams using the logos. I know the sioux actually made the NBA stop bothering one team about using a sioux guy for a logo.
I'm baaaaaaackShame I only found out about this today (it happened Saturday), but the great Stan Musial has passed away at the age of 92.
R.I.P., you perfect warrior. You really were one of the greats.
